Ethnographic study of indigenous peoples in Ecuador with a focus on their assimilation into liberal society. Several illustrations show the dwellings dress diet and social life of rural Ecuador. Saenz was the undersecretary for public education in Mexico and made influential reforms inspired largely by his teacher and mentor at Columbia University John Dewey including the expansion of secondary schools to rural areas. Also influenced by indigenismo Saenz sought ways to incorporate elements of indigenous cultures into the state-backed official culture. His tenure at the Secretariat for Public Education ended in 1930 after which he received a diplomatic post in Lima where he died in 1941. Secretaria de Educacion Publica paperback books

Anthropological study of indigenous people in Peru with the aim of addressing how best to assimilate indigenous communities to become citizens; Saenz responds to and is critical of Jose Carlos Mariategui’s analyses. Commissioned by the Mexican Secretariat for Education the study was completed with assistance from major Peruvian indigenista intellectuals such as Jose Antonio Encinas and Luis E. Valcárcel. Small scratch bottom left near spine. This is one of the most hilarious books I've ever read while also being an insightful glimpse into the life of a philosopher. In it Maimon describes his humble roots in a deeply impoverished rural Jewish community in Eastern Europe his enlightenment and then his strange and grueling journey to find others as enlightened as he thought himself to be. Hungry for anything even faintly resembling wisdom Maimon oscillates between the mystical and the skeptical with the skeptical side gaining influence as the book progresses. Eventually in his travels he arrives in Germany and surrounds himself with the urbane intellectuals he'd always hoped to join but never quite feels at home. By the end of the book we see Maimon sinking into depression and drink having chosen his career and status over a path with more heart regretting his decision to leave his family and roots behind Maimon is a joy to read at least in his autobiography- his philosophical writings can be very abstruse. He's extremely neurotic but also acutely self-aware and honest never losing sight of a faint glimmer of hope in spite of all his tribulations.
