Linde – No. 412; van der Linde I 367; Kieler Schachkatalog 951; Schmid pp. 185 193 First edition. Moses Hirschel adapted updated and organized the works of two earlier chess masters using a new systematic method to make the games easier for readers to follow. The original work is split into three parts bound together in one volume. It bridges two entirely different eras of chess history combining practical attacking games with complex endgame puzzles. The Two Masters Featured in the Book: Gioachino Greco "Il Calabrese" c. 1600–1634: An Italian master who was one of the world's first professional chess players. He is famous for recording entire games rather than just isolated positions. His section features aggressive tactical combinations famous gambits and early blueprints for mating attacks such as the "Greek Gift" bishop sacrifice. Philipp Stamma c. 1705–1755: A native of Aleppo Syria hence "the Arab" who later moved to Europe. Stamma was a major pioneer of modern algebraic chess notation. His section—the "Secrets of Chess Play"—focuses on his famous collection of 100 endgame studies and desperate positional riddles many of which drew inspiration from ancient Arabic chess literature. Lothar Maximilian Lorenz Schmid 10 May 1928 - 18 May 2013 was a German chess grandmaster. He was born in Radebeul near Dresden into a family who were the co-owners of the Karl May Press which published the German Karl May adventure novels. He was best known as the chief arbiter at several World Chess Championship matches in particular the 1972 encounter between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky at Reykjavic. He was also an avid collector of chess books and paraphernalia. It was reputed that he owned the largest known private chess library in the world as well as a renowned collection of chess art chess boards and chess pieces from around the globe. Jens Evald Enevoldsen-Elsing 1907-1980 was a Danish chess master born in Copenhagen. Enevoldsen won the Danish Chess Championship five times 1940 1943 1947 1948 and 1960. In 1939 he shared first but lost a playoff and in 1950 he again shared first but lost a lottery. He took 4th place at the Helsinki 1947 zonal tournament; Eero Böök and Gösta Stoltz shared first place. Enevoldsen played for Denmark ten times in Chess Olympiads 1933 1935 1937 1939 1952 1956 1958 1966 1970 and 1972. Condition: With the collector's bookplate of Lothar Schmid. 1919ref. 1003928vo original cloth 260 pp. Backstrip somewhat faded and lettering on front cover is rubbed paper a bit aged but only slightly. Very good overall. Bishop William Moses was known as the "Baptist Garvey" and was actually a close friend of Marcus Garvey. He stood by Garvey when he was under attack and indicted for mail fraud and continued to speak out in his behalf. Unfortunately he was also involved with Garvey in a disastrous attempt to negotiate an agreement with the Ku Klux Klan. Garvey lost a lot of supporters because of this and Moses pastor of the Philadelphia Zion Baptist Church was asked to leave the church by the elders. This work focuses on the subjugation of the dark races by whites. Moses' goes through history to make his point and much of the discussion is on the international community. His solution for black advancement seems to be "black evangelism" or an active role of the church in the social and political development of the dark races. Lisle Carey Press hardcover

Letona writes in his introduction that "If all my countrymen who leave their native land and return to their homes put their own impressions on the pages of a book.it would not only give the sensation of things outside but would also be a stimulus to induce the Central American to be less shy and seek in the lives of other peoples means that adapt to his own life." He adds in his conclusion that "One of the objectives of this book is to awaken in you the idea of traveling. You the parents who have resources send your sons and daughters to study to work abroad." Remarkable illustrated account of the author's journey to the Holy Land with descriptions of ancient and modern Jewish culture in France Malta Tunisia Constantinople Lebanon Syria and Palestine; Moses Margoliouth was a learned and respected minister in the Church of England of the nineteenth century. As his name might indicate he was also of Jewish extraction. Born in Suwalki Poland in 1818 he arrived in England in 1837 and converted to the Christian faith the following year. This work exemplifies the growing English interest in the biblical Land of Israel during the 19th century and growing identification with the Nation of Israel leading in this case to increased missionary activity but also to a support of Zionism. 1970ref. 11107New York: McGraw-Hill 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Octavo 952pp. illustrated. A crisp clean copy near fine in the publisher's navy leather stamped in gilt with red leather spine label. Very gentle foxing to edges and a touch of rubbing to extremities but a nice example. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Moses on the half-title page: "To Betty and Vince from Bob Moses." There are a few faint foxing marks to the signature page. This is one of an unidentified but certainly small number of presentation copies specially bound by the publisher for Moses to give to friends and colleagues. An uncommon memoir which contains great swaths of reproduced correspondence between Moses and other officials relating to the various public works projects in which he was involved. Moses was perhaps the most influential civil servant in history who never sought wider political office. His complex legacy was explored in Robert Caro's unparalleled biography "The Power Broker" which was published four years after this memoir. McGraw-Hill hardcover
