The primary characters are a magazine feature-writer accompanied by an "incredibily attractive and talented" woman news photographer futher described as "brittle successful and lovely." Polonsky's biographers call the novel as "his major literary contribution to the war effort" and one contemporary reviewer noted that it had "all the sure-fire ingredients" for a movie scenario although his career as a screenwriter wouldn't really start up until after the war -- "action brawls intrigue and suspense" -- as the aforementioned pair uncovered a Nazi plot to scuttle the vessel midway through its voyage. .
