1865réf. 31223New York. May 5 1865. The main news in this edition concerns the ongoing events in the assassination of President Lincoln. A long story from Springfield Illinois reports on the arrival of the funeral procession and there are several stories about the pursuit of the conspirators in the President's murder. One story calls Jefferson Davis "a fugitive from justice with a price set on his head as an assassin." Another long piece brings news from the South as military action in the Civil War winds to a halt. The last page is taken up by an account of the Irish Independence movement and a profile of "Fenians at Home and Abroad." Large folio newspaper. Split along fold with loss to a few words. About very good unopened. unknown books
1862réf. 129821862. Lincoln Abraham. Front-page printing of the September 22 1862 Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in the Republican Herald and Post of Providence Rhode Island dated September 27 1862 carrying Lincoln's emancipation policy to newspaper readers only five days after its issuance. The proclamation announced that enslaved people in states remaining in rebellion on January 1 1863 would thereafter be free making its rapid newspaper circulation central to public understanding of a major change in Union war policy. Its appearance in this Providence issue documents the immediate dissemination of Lincoln's order during the Civil War. Republican Herald and Post. Providence Rhode Island. Saturday morning September 27 1862. Four pages printed recto and verso. The front page prints Lincoln's September 22 proclamation including the passage: "I Abraham Lincoln President of the United States of America and Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy thereof do hereby proclaim and declare that hereafter as heretofore the war will be prosecuted for the object of practically restoring the constitutional relations between the United States and the people thereof. Abraham Lincoln." The full proclamation joined the Union war effort to a stated deadline for emancipation in rebellious states while also addressing compensated emancipation colonization enforcement by military and naval personnel and the status of people escaping slavery under federal law. Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation after the Battle of Antietam and months of debate within his administration over the timing and legal basis of emancipation. By printing the proclamation on September 27 the Republican Herald and Post records how quickly readers encountered the new policy through the daily and weekly press before the final Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1 1863. Minor chipping to the edges; otherwise excellent condition. A closely dated Civil War newspaper preserving contemporary public circulation of Lincoln's preliminary order for emancipation. unknown books

1855réf. 20487Berlin: Kornek 1855. Hardcover. g. 8vo. 2 238 8 pp. Blue cloth with decorative gold lettering in English on spine. The author Abraham ben Nathan a.k.a the Rabn ha-Yarhi was born in the second half of the 12th century. He began this work in 1204. The extreme importance of this work goes well beyond the limited influence it had on the history of Jewish legal codes for it contains numerous literal quotations from the two Talmuds and most of the halakhic and haggadic Midrashim as well as from certain collections of the Haggadot which have been wholly lost; so that the "Manhig" contributes considerably to the textual criticism of all of those works. Text in Hebrew. Pp. 1-18 are detached but present. Minor foxing and marginal pencil and pen marks and underlining throughout. Long inscription in pen on front endpaper with notes taken from the Jewish Encyclopedia entry regarding the author. Book is in overall good condition. Kornek hardcover books

One of six contemporary printings this is the only one which does not begin with the phrase 'Connecticut Republicanism.' Bishop was a Jeffersonian and outspoken anti- Federalist which made him an unusual figure in Connecticut politics. "Learning that he would give this Republican campaign speech as the Phi Beta Kappa orator the Yale Corporation withdrew Bishop's invitation. Speaking to 1500 people at a local meeting-house Bishop in rousing rhetoric denounced the state and national Federalist party for its leadership social assumptions and class prejudices. He argued that the Federalists were deluding the people in order to enslave them under a monarchy and castigated the union of church and state in Connecticut charging the clergy with preaching Federalist propaganda. The two-hour harangue ended with a call for the election of Republicans to preserve the liberty so dearly and recently won." Sheidley. Evans 36980. Felcone 18. Sheidley 132.
