réf. 11717Ford's Theatre stereopticon view undated depicts the Washington D.C. building where John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln on April 14 1865 during a performance of Our American Cousin. The image belongs to the later visual commemoration of Lincoln's assassination presenting the surviving theater as a historic site for audiences encountering Civil War history through commercially produced stereoscopic imagery. Lincoln was carried from the theater to the Petersen House across the street where he died the following morning. Full color stereopticon view 6 x 3 inches captioned "Old Theater Where Lincoln Was Assassinated Washington D.C." The image is a later historical view of Ford's Theatre adapted from a photograph contemporary with the production of the stereoview rather than an image made at the time of the assassination. Printed descriptive remarks appear on the reverse. Produced for stereoscopic viewing the paired images were intended to create an illusion of depth when viewed through the appropriate optical device. Stereoscopic images circulated historic buildings landscapes and monuments to domestic and educational audiences during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries making geographically distant sites available as visual objects of study and commemoration. This example records Ford's Theatre not as the scene of the 1865 assassination itself but as a later memorialized landmark identified explicitly through its caption. JOSEPH ABRAHAM LONG 1879-1953 had a remarkably long association with the University of California: forty-five years. He joined the faculty in Zoology as an Instructor in 1908 immediately after the completion of his doctor's degree at Harvard University. Long's major teaching effort was in embryology; he organized and developed courses in general vertebrate and advanced mammalian morphogenesis. His widely known atlases of chick and rat development co-authored with his associate Dr. Paul L. Burlingame represent a major contribution to instruction in developmental anatomy. These labelled stereoscopic photographs of beautifully prepared specimens--whole mounts India-ink-injected embryos and microscopic dissections--greatly facilitate the students' understanding of structural relationships in the vertebrate embryo by providing striking and illuminating three-dimensional views of the unfolding ever changing morphogenic patterns. Professor Long was a master technician skilled in the preparation of biological material for microscopic study. A few examples of Long's inventiveness may be cited: a unique method for dissecting embryos by means of electrically operated knives made from slivers of razor blades and by needles held and delicately controlled by a system of levers; a complete photographic assembly inclined camera illuminator specimen holder etc. for making stereoscopic photomicrographs of dissected embryos; and a remarkably complex organ-culture apparatus with mechanical heart reservoirs filters and aerators. The investigations with Professor Evans on the estrous cycle of the rat are classic and culminated in 1922 in a volume in the University of California Memoirs. This monograph has been basic to many researches throughout the world in embryology histology endocrinology and reproductive physiology. The Long-Evans strain of rats now used in many laboratories is another legacy--a living one--of that fruitful collaboration. California Laboratory Supply Co. books

1947réf. 7020New York: Wiley & Sons 1947 First edition. Original navy cloth. Octavo. Sixteen figures seven tables. A very good copy. Abraham Wald pioneered the science of decision analysis and in particular that of sequential decision making. Before Wald the traditional style of statistical decision was to posit a hypothesis make a predetermined number of measurements then make a decision whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. Wald realized that this procedure is quite wasteful and that many measurements could be saved if given the option to decide at every step whether to continue or stop the measurement process. This idea revolutionized the art of statistical testing and was later developed in the hands of computer scientists into a field known as on-line algorithms. "Most although not all of Wald's results were summed up in Sequential Analysis 1974. With minor exceptions the entire contents of this book were obtained by him. Such a phenomenon is rare in mathematical books and indicates the extent to which he founded and dominated the field of sequential analysis" DSB. Wiley & Sons, hardcover books
