Initially published 1802-1820 in parts in Great Britain. Rees' work not only featured theological and humanistic issues but also extensive articles on mathematics and natural sciences. The Cyclopaedia "is the richest work for technology of the period with detailed text and handsome carefully prepared plates." Ferguson Eugene. "Contributions to Bibliography in the History of Technology part II". Technology and Culture 3.2 1962: 169 p. "Rees was convinced that the important progress made during the last decades of the eighteenth century especially in the fields of history geography geology natural history and the physical sciences senu lato required a new type of encyclopedia with the accent on these fields as well as the still relatively undeveloped domains of biography and the history of sciences. The Cyclopaedia thus became one of the first works of its kind to be compiled with the help of 'persons eminently distinguished in these branches of science to which they had devoted their talents.'" Taxon Vol. 35 No. 2 1986 452-453. Some of the notable contributors to this work were Charles Bruney on music; Charles Koenig Robert Bakewell and John Farey on geology; John Dalton and Humphry Davy on chemistry; David Mushet on metallurgy; William Pearson on astronomy; James Edward Smith William Wood William Fitt Drake and William Woodville on botany. "Rees Cyclopaedia is one of the first works to interpret correctly William Smith's ideas on strata identification on the basis of fossil organisms." Ibid. The Cyclopaedia included other notable recent scientific breakthroughs such as Robert Fulton's Cast Iron Aqueduct described in his 1796 book which would become his notable steam engine. 1708réf. 1060Amsterdam 1708. 4to. Carel Allard Contemporary boards. With an engraved allegorical frontispiece and 14 full-page engraved plates illustrating the life of Jesus. 4 32 pp. Very rare and exceptionally fine engraved series illustrating the Life of Christ from one of the most popular Dutch religious educational works of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The narrative is presented in verse with biblical references engraved directly onto the copperplates in the blank corners surrounding the predominantly oval compositions. The series comprises 10 highly accomplished engravings apparently based on paintings or drawings by several different artists. Although not uniform in style the plates are consistently of a high artistic quality. The first 8 engravings appear to form a coherent group evidently derived from the work of the same sensitive and refined artist while the final two plates seem to have been based on the designs of a more mannerist hand. The intervening plates display considerable variation in both format and style including a charming Madonna and Child with cherubs probably inspired by a composition by Raphael. The present work is introduced by laudatory poems by Ludovicus Smids 1649-1720 Hendrik Graauwhart 1661-1732 and L. Hobrink praising both the subject matter and the artistic execution of the work. At the end is a publisher's catalogue of Allard's publications listing recently published works including one dated 1708 as well as earlier publications the earliest dated 1690.The binding is slightly rubbed. Benjamin Harz Verlag The first volume in contemporary black morocco with the title lettered in gold on the front board and spine the second volume in contemporary grey cloth with the title lettered in black on the front and spine ad 2 in the original publisher's printed wrappers. With musical scores throughout. 2 works in 3 volumes. XII 47 3 117 1; IX 1 140; 47 1 pp. Abraham Idelsohn 1882-1938 is widely considered the pioneer of modern Jewish musicology. Born in todays Latvia he travelled extensively and recorded the musical traditions of the diasporic Jewish communities. Over the course of 20 years Idelsohn surveyed the musical traditions of various Jewish communities in Palestine and throughout the Diaspora including Babylonian Persian Bukharian Oriental Sephardi Moroccan German Eastern European and Hassidic communities and published the final volume of his collection in 1932. The two volumes offered here form part of his monumental and very rare work collecting the songs of the Yemenite and Babylonian Jews. Idelsohns survey and catalogue of the songs encompass Synagogal and Non-Synagogal songs comprising of songs for the Sabbath feasts and high feast working days as well as lamentations penitential songs and songs for other occasions and folk songs. In his monumental work he presented an extensive introduction to the musical culture of the Jewish tribes and extensive commentary on the variations within the chant. Idelsohns works were printed by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig the worlds oldest music publishing house and renowned for their high quality musical scores. Idelsohn travelled extensively. During his stay in Jerusalem he observed a rich variety of musical traditions among the Jewish communities there. By studying these traditional tunes he discovered recurring patterns and sequences unique to Jewish music. This led him to conclude that these musical phrases had a common origin dating back to the first century C.E in Israel and Palestine. He found that these motifs were categorized into three tonal centres corresponding to the Dorian Phrygian and Lydian modes of ancient Greece. Each of these modes produced a specific emotional response - the Dorian was used for elevated and inspired texts the Phrygian for sentimental and emotional texts and the Lydian for lamenting and confessions of sins. Idelsohn also categorized musical motives as those that prepare begin or conclude a musical phrase. In Jerusalem Idelsohn started his career as a cantor and music teacher at the Hebrew Teacher's College. He was deeply influenced by the diverse Jewish community in Palestine and embarked on a massive project to document their unique musical and linguistic traditions. He received a research grant from the Academy of Science in Vienna and a phonograph to assist with his field work. In 1914 he released the first volume of his landmark ten-volume work Thesaurus of Oriental Hebrew Melodies which focused on the Yemenite community in Palestine. Idelsohn was particularly interested in this community as he believed that their Hebrew pronunciation and musical heritage dated back to the first century CE and had remained relatively untouched by outside influences due to their migratory history and isolated location. With the owners mark of composer Ludovicus Mirandolle 1904-1974 in all volumes. The treatise is a kind of iconographic and textual compendium intended for use by the popular preacher. Its format of emblem commentary 'favola' enables a constellation of homiletic exempla to be committed to memory in keeping with a very ancient rhetorical and visual tradition cfr. L. Bolzoni La rete delle immagini. Predicazione in volgare dalle origini a San Bernardino da Siena Torino 2002. "One of the greatest orators Germany has ever produced. People flocked to hear him drawn by the power and vivid clarity of his speech by the inexhaustible wealth of his wit and by the impartial severity with which he denounced the vices of all social classes. He poured his whole being into everything he said. Endowed with extraordinary creativity and inventive originality Abraham blended into his imaginative style fables short stories anecdotes erudite quotations witty sayings colourful and sometimes trivial wordplay sudden asperations personal recollections and vivid genre sketches with flashes of true eloquence—passionate fiery and vibrant. Even when he wrote he stood so to speak at the pulpit and saw his audience before him face to face" L. Bianchi. Per Gio. Parone

FloridaMap1584La Florida Antiquarian/Antique Hand-Colored Map displaying Southeast North America what is now the South-Eastern United States with parts of what are now the states of Florida Alabama Louisiana Texas and Mexico. Map 6 x 9 inches on rag paper aka laid paper sheet 8.25 x 10.3 inches. This map is regarded as the first printed map to feature the Florida peninsula when the territory was owned by the Spanish Empire areas of the New World. It first appeared in the 1584 edition of "Theatrum orbis terrarum". The first edition of "Theatrum" was 1570 but did not include this map. This engraved map is based on a drawing by Geronimo de Chiaves 1523-1574 the royal cosmographer and cartographer to Philip II king of Spain. and appeared in 'Theatrum orbis terrarum' published by Abraham Ortelius 1527-1598 in 1584. Cumming W. P. The Southeast in Early Maps "One of the half-dozen most important mother maps of southeastern North America. This map probably had more influence than any other map in establishing the subsequent conception of Florida as including that part of the present U.S. from the peninsula of Florida northward to about 40° north latitude and westward to or beyond the Mississippi." Ralph E. Ehrenberg in an online article "'Marvellous Countries and Lands' Notable Maps of Florida 1507-1846' discusses the map: 'The Chaves-Ortelius map is an historical document of major significance. It provided Europeans with their first detailed but distorted image of the present southeastern interior of the United States. The lower course of the Mississippi and the Mobile-Tombigbee Rivers are clearly discernable for the first time on a printed map.' Near Fine hand-colored copy.
