Best.-Nr. 109205Furth Itzik ben Leib Buchbinder 1763. . 4to; restored publisher's half-calf marbled covers almost entirely perished spine rubbed and chipped at the top end; some browning to leaves a stamp and an old ownership inscription to title; 2 241 ll. Commentary on Rashi's commentary on the Pentatuch with a schematic map of Israel from the collection of Yosef Asher Pollock a 19th-century rabbi whose books were posthumously gifted to various collections. Elijah ben Abraham Mizrahi a.k.a. Re'em c. 1455-1525 or 1526 was a Constantinople rabbi and mathematician who became the Chief Rabbi of the Ottoman Empire in 1495 a post which he held until his death. As part of the role Mizrahi had a seat in the divan assigned to him by the Sultan beside the Mufti and above the Patriarch of the Christians. He had written several works in his lifetime but considered this to be his most important one. 'Sefer HaMizrahi' as it's known is a super-commentary on Rashi's commentary on the Torah and is counted as one of the most important works on the subject. It was first published in Venice in 1527 after Mizrahi's death by his son Israel. Israel edited his work adding a preface to it in which he asked the readers in case they were unable to understand certain passages not to criticise his father but to apply to Israel for explanations instead. In this edition Rashi's commentary is printed in block letters while the Biur Mizrahi commentary appears in Rashi script. On reverse of l.211 there is a schematic map of Israel drawn primarily in straight lines with its east side facing upward. This map was first printed in 1717. Vinograd Furth 292. His contributions to historical study cannot be understated and the American Historical Association's Beveridge Award exists to demonstrate as much. Houghton Mifflin Company unknown

Moderate toning light soiling to edges a few faint creases printer's flaw and clean tear to right column no loss to legibility. Rare. $3000. Ashford v. Thornton dealt with the aftermath of the murder of Mary Ashford in 1817. Abraham Thornton who had seen and been intimate with Ashford the previous night was tried for rape and murder but acquitted of both charges due to a lack of evidence and inconsistencies in the prosecutor's case. Public outcry around his acquittal led to Mary's brother William invoking an "appeal of murder." This uncommon legal practice allowed a retrial of a defendant acquitted for murder but crucially gave the defendant the right to trial by battle. Thornton invoked that right. After extensive proceedings in the Court of King's Bench the court found that he was eligible to do so. Our broadside documents the final hearing in which Ashford declined to battle with Thornton and withdrew his appeal. Thornton was given a pro forma arraignment and released. The case resulted in the abolition of appeals by murder and thus the end of trial by battle. This broadside is rare and appears to be unrecorded. No copies located on OCLC or Library Hub. Not at Harvard or the British Library. unknown

The entire piece measures 20 inches by 23.25 inches. A rare striking portrait of Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through its Civil War and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America abolished slavery and strengthened the federal government. Lincoln began constructing his cabinet on election night and sought to create a cabinet that would unite the Republican party. His eventual cabinet would include his primary rivals for the Republican nomination and although his appointees held differing views on economic issues all were opposed to the expansion of slavery into the territories of the United States. The most senior cabinet post of Secretary of State was appointed to William Seward who had recently failed to win the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and Lincoln's choice for Secretary of the Treasury was Ohio Senator Salmon P. Chase Seward's primary political rival and the leader of a radical faction of the Republican party that sought the immediate abolition of slavery. E.C. Middleton unknown

Initially published 1802-1820 in parts in Great Britain. Rees' work not only featured theological and humanistic issues but also extensive articles on mathematics and natural sciences. The Cyclopaedia "is the richest work for technology of the period with detailed text and handsome carefully prepared plates." Ferguson Eugene. "Contributions to Bibliography in the History of Technology part II". Technology and Culture 3.2 1962: 169 p. "Rees was convinced that the important progress made during the last decades of the eighteenth century especially in the fields of history geography geology natural history and the physical sciences senu lato required a new type of encyclopedia with the accent on these fields as well as the still relatively undeveloped domains of biography and the history of sciences. The Cyclopaedia thus became one of the first works of its kind to be compiled with the help of 'persons eminently distinguished in these branches of science to which they had devoted their talents.'" 1708Best.-Nr. 1060Amsterdam 1708. 4to. Carel Allard Contemporary boards. With an engraved allegorical frontispiece and 14 full-page engraved plates illustrating the life of Jesus. 4 32 pp. Very rare and exceptionally fine engraved series illustrating the Life of Christ from one of the most popular Dutch religious educational works of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The narrative is presented in verse with biblical references engraved directly onto the copperplates in the blank corners surrounding the predominantly oval compositions. The series comprises 10 highly accomplished engravings apparently based on paintings or drawings by several different artists. Although not uniform in style the plates are consistently of a high artistic quality. The first 8 engravings appear to form a coherent group evidently derived from the work of the same sensitive and refined artist while the final two plates seem to have been based on the designs of a more mannerist hand. The intervening plates display considerable variation in both format and style including a charming Madonna and Child with cherubs probably inspired by a composition by Raphael. The present work is introduced by laudatory poems by Ludovicus Smids 1649-1720 Hendrik Graauwhart 1661-1732 and L. Hobrink praising both the subject matter and the artistic execution of the work. At the end is a publisher's catalogue of Allard's publications listing recently published works including one dated 1708 as well as earlier publications the earliest dated 1690.The binding is slightly rubbed. With musical scores throughout. 2 works in 3 volumes. XII 47 3 117 1; IX 1 140; 47 1 pp. Abraham Idelsohn 1882-1938 is widely considered the pioneer of modern Jewish musicology. Born in todays Latvia he travelled extensively and recorded the musical traditions of the diasporic Jewish communities. Over the course of 20 years Idelsohn surveyed the musical traditions of various Jewish communities in Palestine and throughout the Diaspora including Babylonian Persian Bukharian Oriental Sephardi Moroccan German Eastern European and Hassidic communities and published the final volume of his collection in 1932. The two volumes offered here form part of his monumental and very rare work collecting the songs of the Yemenite and Babylonian Jews. Idelsohns survey and catalogue of the songs encompass Synagogal and Non-Synagogal songs comprising of songs for the Sabbath feasts and high feast working days as well as lamentations penitential songs and songs for other occasions and folk songs. In his monumental work he presented an extensive introduction to the musical culture of the Jewish tribes and extensive commentary on the variations within the chant. Idelsohns works were printed by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig the worlds oldest music publishing house and renowned for their high quality musical scores. Idelsohn travelled extensively. During his stay in Jerusalem he observed a rich variety of musical traditions among the Jewish communities there. By studying these traditional tunes he discovered recurring patterns and sequences unique to Jewish music. This led him to conclude that these musical phrases had a common origin dating back to the first century C.E in Israel and Palestine. He found that these motifs were categorized into three tonal centres corresponding to the Dorian Phrygian and Lydian modes of ancient Greece. Each of these modes produced a specific emotional response - the Dorian was used for elevated and inspired texts the Phrygian for sentimental and emotional texts and the Lydian for lamenting and confessions of sins. Idelsohn also categorized musical motives as those that prepare begin or conclude a musical phrase. In Jerusalem Idelsohn started his career as a cantor and music teacher at the Hebrew Teacher's College. He was deeply influenced by the diverse Jewish community in Palestine and embarked on a massive project to document their unique musical and linguistic traditions. He received a research grant from the Academy of Science in Vienna and a phonograph to assist with his field work. In 1914 he released the first volume of his landmark ten-volume work Thesaurus of Oriental Hebrew Melodies which focused on the Yemenite community in Palestine. Idelsohn was particularly interested in this community as he believed that their Hebrew pronunciation and musical heritage dated back to the first century CE and had remained relatively untouched by outside influences due to their migratory history and isolated location. With the owners mark of composer Ludovicus Mirandolle 1904-1974 in all volumes.
