Woodcut printer's device at titles; woodcut endpieces in first volume. Hebrew text opens from right to left; leaf numbers in Hebrew characters. Hebrew chronograms yield Jewish dates of publication 5499-5502. Brown library buckram scuffed at extremities spines lettered in gilt. Endleaves renewed. A good set. See foliation and condition notes for each volume below. Scarce eighteenth-century edition of this seminal compendium of Jewish law halakhah. Compiled between 1170 and 1180 while Maimonides was living in Egypt the Mishneh Torah is regarded as the author's magnum opus. It is the only Medieval-era work that surveys the full panoply of Jewish observance including those laws that are only applicable when the Jerusalem Temple is in existence. The present edition is the first to contain Judah Rosanes' commentary Mishneh le-melekh. "Mishneh Torah" The Repetition of the Law is an appellation originally applied to the biblical book of Deuteronomy; the subtitle "ha-Yad ha-Hazakah" The Book of the Strong Hand plays on its subdivision into fourteen books: the numerical value fourteen is represented in Hebrew letters as Yud 10 Dalet 4 which forms the word "yad" hand. Maimonides sought to provide a complete statement of the Oral Law so that a person who mastered first the Written Torah and then the Mishneh Torah would be in no need of any other book. Contemporary reaction was mixed with strong and immediate opposition focusing on the absence of sources and the belief that the work appeared to be intended to supersede study of the Talmud itself. Maimonides responded to these criticisms and the Mishneh Torah endures as an influential work in Jewish religious thought. According to several authorities a decision may not be rendered in opposition to a view of Maimonides even where he apparently militated against the sense of a Talmudic passage for in such cases the presumption was that the words of the Talmud were incorrectly interpreted. Likewise: One must follow Maimonides even when the latter opposed his teachers since he surely knew their views and if he decided against them he must have disapproved their interpretation. Vol. 1: 1 title 8 234 102 3 ff. Repairs at title page with very slight loss of text at verso following leaf and the final leaf. Text embrowned often heavily in first half with some light marginal dampstains throughout. Old manuscript entries in Hebrew at title in at least three hands. Vol. 2: 1 title 148 112 2 ff. Marginal repairs to first and last two leaves no loss of text. Moderately dampstained throughout with some mild embrowning. Old manuscript entries in Hebrew at title in at least two hands; three old stamps at title including at least one censor's approbation. Vol. 3: 1 title 221 169 ff. Repairs at bottom margin to title with loss of some text below imprint and at final lines of rabbinic approbations at verso and at bottom margin following leaf with some text loss and obscuration by translucent paper tape. Small marginal repair at final leaf. Light dampstaining in first half; remaining text with mild embrowning. 1763réf. 160235London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley 1763. The prelude to his magnum opus First edition of the prelude to Tucker's nine-volume magnum opus The Light of Nature Pursued which outlined a vast and idiosyncratic philosophical system and which had a noted influence on his philosophical contemporaries. Tucker was an empiricist in the tradition of John Locke holding that the mind begins as a blank slate. In his moral philosophy he proposed that our own satisfaction is the motive of our actions and that the maximum satisfaction of this is the ultimate moral good. He can consequently be seen as an early precursor of utilitarianism. This work published pseudonymously was not well received by the critics. "The 1763 fragment was strongly criticized in the Monthly Review to which Tucker provided a humorous reply Man in Quest of Himself under the new pseudonym Cuthbert Comment" ODNB. The Light of Nature Pursued however enjoyed a high reputation from its first appearance and was a noted influence on William Paley Thomas Malthus and James MacIntosh. Octavo 198 x 124 mm. 1867réf. 000793IPSWICH MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1867. On offer are five handwritten manuscript journals all having belonged to the Caldwell family who lived in Massachusetts one of the diaries 1870 has the name Ezra S. Vieyes written in it. A casual reading does not determine where Ezra fits in with the Caldwell family but a more detailed reading will hopefully flesh out the relationship. Two of the diaries have the name of the family scion being Abraham Caldwell of Ipswich Massachusetts. Other towns mentioned include Westminster Fitchburg Northborough and Worcester. The diaries represent the years 1867 full of entries 1870 a quarter full 1875 a half filled 1887 fully written and the 1890's. Though not all fully written and the entries suggest illiterate writers these diaries represent a true piece of Americana with a treasure trove of local historical detail and genealogical information. For the medical collector there is an interesting thread running throughout - Mr. Caldwell is quite aged and he catalogues his daily ailments certainly a medical professional may assess his health from his writings. Here are some snippets: 1867 - "February 26th Went to examination. Lizzie Rawson teach good." "March 4th Went to town meeting. Another trial of Shemp decided as it should be." "May 10th Surveyed road to town distance of about 2 ¾ miles 15 ft." "June 17th Golden wedding 75-100 people persons present." "September 13th Took Templers Degrees. Went to town to lecture. Carried B.M. Balch." "October 13th On euqaduct to town meeting for roads. Was chosen on committee." 1887 "January 9th 7 Below. Very cold. Snow flakes flying all day. Ben out very little today. Louitah Lord little more comfortable but very sick." "February 9th Sick all day. From Salem paper I see Mr. Joseph Pusfer died in Salem Oct. 19th 1886. Born July 18th 1798." "March 14th Today I hav made a grait mistak in being two positive when in fact I was rong. My mind is faking me." "June 22nd and 23rd Stage coach below belonged to Appleton farm . Boiled out sink cess pool very hard job. Had nummness in my arm and shoulder. Stage coach passed to day for Salem." "July 25th Hot and sultry. A young lady came to Mrs. Batysons. Sang for House Benefit." "August 9th Went marsh with North Harris and Negro. Went to Beverly. Stayed at Edwards over night." "August 21st Fine and pleasant. John Billy's mother and sister here. Conrad G to made round Cape Ann." "October 6th Tryed to make some wine. Caried my grapes to Capt. Wilcomb and he pressed them for me." "October 19th Finished pounding the beans then went to Georgetown. Went in to Noisas Shoe factory. Was kindly received and shown from basement up. Felt interest and enjoyed it muh." "December 14th Very warm and Pleasant. Went over to south side river to Mrs. Dolls with Edy B. Escamined his stock." "December 16th Cooler. Gave notice to Mrs. Campbell that I should want the tenement she now ocupies for my own use the first of April next." "December 19th Mrs. Smith at the Invenational House left and fell and broke both arms. Slippery this morn. Bought turkey of Perkins." The 1893-1900 journal in the lot is a handwritten financial journal which has about 100 pages of expense type entries. I believe most of the entries have to do with rentals and money collected for the rentals. This journal has the name John Caldwell written on the inside. The front cover has fallen off of this journal and some of the pages are torn. The first 20 pages have also been torn out and are not accounted for. réf. 7027Antwerp: 1573-80. No binding. Very Good. 355 x 500 mm. in full early wash colour one or two light foxmarks otherwise in very good condition. A good example of the FIRST STATE of a classic map of the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It was published by Abraham Ortelius in the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' for the first time in 1573. It is drawn directly from the written account of the French naturalist Pierre Belon of 1553 and cartographically from Jacomo Franco's map published in Venice c.1570 just prior to this map. Franco's map improved the general outline of the island and provided more place names than any other before it. It is unfortunately very rare surviving in only three known examples. This Ortelius map is the earliest derivative of it and is engraved by Jan van Deutecum on a larger scale. It is augmented with three sailing ships a fine sea monster and three ornate cartouches. One of these encloses an inset map of the island of Lemnos. Ortelius' map had a great influence on the future cartography of Cyprus being copied on numerous occasions by later map mapkers.
