Each engraved leaf is engraved on one side only. Original full leather binding is moderately worn on the exterior hinges and extremities with minor warping of front board. Front endpapers are lacking. Minor staining to the fore-edge of the majority of pages affecting the margins only. Minor foxing scattered throughout in several instances affecting the plates. Previous owner's stamp circa 1900 on title page and half title page and bookplate on front pastedown endpaper: Henry von Wackerbarth Chicago. The final two leaves of plates are creased on the edge not affecting the engravings and the rear endpapers are heavily creased. A very attractive first edition of this work. Quite good with minimal marking to covers which are somewhat bowed moderate foxing to blanks pages a little darkened in first volume penciled bookseller's notes on front pastedown which is worn light stamp and remnants of a bookplate or label on front endpaper name at head of first blank and the occasional brief ink notation or small stain. Meant to compete against a Century Magazine series which had been written by Lincoln's private secretaries John Nicolay and John Hay Tarbell's 20-part series The Life of Abraham Lincoln was a massive success and earned Tarbell a national reputation as a major writer and the leading authority on Abraham Lincoln. The popular series based on Tarbell's own original research and interviews helped boost McClure's circulation to over 250000 which climbed to over 300000 by 1900 and allowed McClure to buy a printing plant and a bindery. Good dark impression; ligtly toned; old red crayon lines from Arta to Lamia and on the Isthmus of Corinth various other pencil underlinings; Short centrefo0ld split at lower margin repaired to verso. Abraham Ortelius 1527-1598 Flemish Cartographer . produced the first modern Atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" in 1570. printed by Aegidus Coppen Diest. There were numerous editions thereafter with texts in various languages; the printing of such was taken over by Chrstoffel Plantijn in 1579 . Ortelius himself drew all the maps in manuscript before passing them to the printers. there is conjecture that he may have engraved some of the plates as well Ortelius was Geographer Royal To Phillip II of Spain from 1575. He also worked closely with Braun & Hogenburg on the "Civitas Orbis Terarum". After his death the plates were purchased by Jan Baptiste Vrients in 1601 who published further editions until 1612.
