1696rif. 40906Leiden and Utrecht: Pieter vander Aa and François Halma 1696. Two volumes folio. 15 5/16 x 10 1/4 inches. Half title title printed in red and black with engraved vignette. Engraved additional title and 243 engraved plates. Contemporary Dutch blindstamped vellum with arabesque design. Provenance: Karl Magnussun bookplate – John David Drummond 8th Earl of Perth Viscount Strathallan First expanded edition of one of the most attractive Dutch florilegia of the seventeenth century. Munting was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and took over and enlarged the botanic garden founded by his father Henricus. The present work depicts some of the exotic and remarkable plants growing in the garden. It is one of the earliest and most important documents concerning Japanese flora and its importation into the West predating Thunbergs works by almost one hundred years. "Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics but his posthumously published opus magnum the Naauwkeurige enjoyed particular success at least in part due to the novelty of the plates which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds . The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality" Oak Spring Flora. The initial botanical line drawings are now known to have been by about ten different but unidentified artists. Some time after Munting's death and in preparation for their publication these line drawings had tone and the pictorial back- and fore-grounds added by Jan Goeree 1670-1731 under the supervision of the publishers. The engraving and etching was then carried out by Jacob Gole and Joseph Mulder engraver of many of plates in Maria Sibylla Merians work on the insects of Surinam. 1860rif. 007988Philadelphia: By the Author 1860. First Edition. Blindstamped Cloth. Very Good. A few names still well-remembered with accounts of many now a distant memory from what had been the largest city in the United States until the late 18th Century. 8vo. 23.5 by 16 cm. 223 pp. 20 plates half of which are portraits with tinted background and the other half are maps or diagrams of streets. These diagrams in most instances have indications of the owners of storefronts. Two of the maps are folding expanding by their width. The widest with three folds doesn't name proprietors of stores but has pleasant drawings of the buildings although these drawings have a generic quality like Monopoly buildings and thus aren't reliable as a visual source of the actual appearance of the riverfront at the time. Although this was privately printed as indicated by its being published by the Author there is a substantial subscription list almost six pages long at the end. Howes R321. Condition: erosion of cloth at spine extremities. Tearing along joints repaired but still apparent where there was tear. Corners rubbed and other typical symptoms of shelfwear. Slight cocking of text block -- front board overhangs over rear board. Foxing generally light and other than along page edges quite occasional -- we don't think the foxing and other soiling and/or age toning is going to be disconcerting to most. rif. 30892 p.l. viii 236 pp. 8vo attractive antique calf double gilt fillet round sides flat spine gilt uncut. Paris: veuve Tilliard et Fils 1805. The rare sale catalogue of the library rich in oriental books and manuscripts of Anquetil-Duperron 1731-1805 French orientalist and brother of the historian Pierre Anquetil. Abraham Hyacinthe had a fascinating early life: while unsuccessfully studying for the priesthood in Paris and Utrecht he developed a passion for Hebrew Arabic Persian and other languages of the East. He travelled to India as a private soldier in 1754 in order to search for the works of Zoroaster. Granted free passage he learned modern Persian in Pondicherry and Sanskrit at Chandernagore. When war broke out between France and England Anquetil-Duperron travelled widely throughout India on foot learning further languages and studying the antiquities and sacred laws of the Hindus. He returned to Europe in an English vessel ultimately arriving in Paris in 1762 with 180 oriental manuscripts. He devoted many of the following years to scholarship editing and publishing many important oriental texts. The French Revolution seems to have greatly affected him: during that period he abandoned society and lived in voluntary poverty on a few pence a day. A fine copy. 1600 lots and priced throughout in a contemporary hand.
