1728Best.-Nr. A2RGD4WT38YEAmsterdam: Leonardus Schenk 1728. In black passepartout and gilt frame 82 x 121 cm. Large engraved wall print on 2 sheets together 58 x 97 cm the sheets overlapping each other slightly showing the traditional business centre of the city of Leiden. The title both in Dutch and French is printed in a banderole at the head with putti on each side supporting the arms of Leiden and Holland. Leonardus Schenk's name appears as engraver and publisher at the right tip of the banderole. A large engraved wall print in two sheets showing the trading and commercial centre of the city of Leiden at the convergence of the Oude Rijn and Nieuwe Rijn canals. Unlike most other Dutch towns Leiden had no central market square so that the waterways formed the major access routes for merchandise. On the banks of the canals there is a lively market that converges on the bridge central in the print. Market traders and customers come and go. Women from the coastal fishing villages of Katwijk and Noortwijk display fresh fish for sale. Right in the print we see the monumental "Waag" the weigh-house built in 1658 following a plan by the Dutch architect and engraver Pieter Post. The splendid relief designed by Rombout Verhulst that crowns the entrance is reproduced with a sharp eye for detail. In front of the building commercial goods are hoisted up from carts and a number of ships for transport to the weigh-house. Several other ships had moored and now continue to their destination. A boat flying the Dutch flag brings in a prominent party while a herald standing precariously at the bow trumpets for right of way. We know of several other wall prints by Schenk depicting local situations with almost photographic detail. Thanks to this detail important socio-historical aspects have been passed on to later generations giving these prints an important cultural meaning today. With some faint foxing otherwise in very good condition.l Overvoorde Catalogus van de prentverzameling der Gemeente Leiden 1906 no. 964; Waller Biogr. woordenb. Noord Ned. graveurs p. 287. Best.-Nr. 25123Charles II on his way back to the throne: a lavishly illustrated contemporary account of his triumphant 1660 journey through Holland and departure from Scheveningen for England marking the dramatic beginning of the Restoration. An important and lavishly illustrated contemporary account of Charles IIs celebrated visit to the Dutch Republic in May 1660 immediately before his restoration to the English throne. After years of exile on the Continent Charles travelled from Breda through the Dutch Republic to Scheveningen from where he embarked for England. His departure marked the dramatic conclusion of the English Interregnum and the beginning of the Restoration monarchy. The work records the elaborate receptions banquets processions and ceremonies organised in Charless honour. Particularly important are the six large engravings documenting events at Delft The Hague and Scheveningen. They provide a vivid visual record of the political theatre surrounding the Restoration and of the crucial Dutch role in Charles IIs return to power. The contemporary vellum binding and the presence of the separately published celebratory poem Anglia triumphans make this an especially attractive historical ensemble.Folio. 4 108 pp. Contemporary full vellum. 1660Best.-Nr. 23501The Hague 1660. Folio. Adrian Vlack Contemporary vellum sewn on 5 supports laced through the joints modern green closing ties. With the engraved coat-of-arms of Charles II on the title page an engraved folding portrait of Charles II 6 double-page engraved plates an engraved headpiece and two decorated woodcut initials. 4 "124" =126 6 pp. First edition of a beautifully illustrated account of Charles II of England's 1630-1685 travels through the Netherlands on his way to regain the English Crown. The splendid plates in the present copy are in their first states and the portrait of Charles II even in a proof state. The text was based on both eye-witness accounts and the government papers the author had access to.Charles I 1600-1649 father of Charles II had a long-running dispute with Parliament which lead to two English Civil Wars in quick succession and eventually to Charles' execution. After this Great Britain became a republic with Oliver Cromwell 1599-1658 as the Lord Protector. Charles II was then crowned king of only Scotland 1649-1651 but was threatened by Cromwell's army and forced into exile on the continent where he stayed in the Southern Low Countries. When Cromwell died he was succeeded by his son Richard. Richard had little experience however and quickly resigned. During the unrest that followed Parliament decided to accept the Declaration of Breda which were Charles' conditions for returning as king. He was crowned in Westminster Abbey in April 1661.Charles II received his invitation to return to England on the 8th of May 1660 while staying in Breda. The present work is an account of his journey to London via Delft The Hague and Scheveningen. The plates show Charles' arrival in Delft and The Hague on the Vijverberg his reception in The Hague with a banquet at the Mauritshuis where he was seated next to the later Dutch king William III two plates of Charles II addressing the Dutch Parliament one with the members standing and one with them seated and Charles's departure from Scheveningen. They were engraved after designs by Jacob Toorenvliet 1640-1719 and Adriaen van de Venne 1590-1662. The work was simultaneously published in French English and Dutch by the same printer and with the same plates. The author of the text was the colourful diplomat Abraham de Wicquefort 1598-1682 who after having been the Resident in Paris for the Elector of Brandenburg from 1626 to 1658 was appointed Historian of Holland by his patron the Pensionary Johan de Witt. He also was the Resident in The Hague of the famous art collector and collector of books the Duke of Brandenburg August of Wolfenbüttel. He wrote a number of works on diplomacy and Dutch history. The vellum is somewhat scratched with minor restorations new closing ties. The work is somewhat browned throughout with rusty paperclip marks on the first flyleaf and the lower margin of the first page the edges of the 4th plate Banquet in the Mauritshuis are somewhat frayed and the margins of the 6th plate Charles II addressing parliament have been cut somewhat short but without affecting the engraved image. 1498Best.-Nr. ABC_49311Colophon: Venice: Petrus Liechtenstein for Johannes Lucilius Santritter 1498. 20th-century limp vellum sewn on 2 thin vellum straps laced through the joints with the manuscript name of the wrong author and year of publication on the spine. The work is housed in a modern marbled paper slipcase. 4to. With a woodcut title page and numerous tables. Highly important 15th-century work on navigation which helped sailors navigate more accurately. According to Gunn the work "immediately helped to revolutionize ocean navigation. Prior to the Almanach navigators seeking to determine their position in the high seas had to correct for "compass error" the deviation of the magnetic north from the true north by recourse to the quadrant and the Pole Star. But this proved less useful as they approached the equator and the Pole Star began to disappear into the horizon. Zacuto's Almanach supplied the first accurate table of solar declination allowing navigators to use the sun instead."The work contains dozens of astronomical tables charting the position of the sun moon and five planets between 1473 and 1530. The calculations were based on the Alfonsine Tables and the work of other astronomers. As the data were presented in simple tables with the positions of a planet easily interpolated between entries the work was easy to use. Zacuto's success in fusing his mathematical and astronomical observations with practical aspects of oceanic navigation such as the preparation of sea charts and instruments vital for the most important navigators of the time undoubtedly makes him a major contributor to the creation of the world of today.Abraham Zacuto 1452-ca. 1515 was one the most important geographers and cosmographers in the age of Columbus. His astrolabe astronomical tables and charts played a fundamental role in Portuguese and Spanish navigation to America and India as they were used by Vasco da Gama and Columbus. The navigators to Brazil and India also took Zacutos charts with them. As such Zacuto is one of the men who helped usher Portuguese global expansion. With a later ownership annotation on the title page and contemporary annotations in the margins throughout. The vellum is somewhat creased and browned with a dent on the back. The lower corner of the first few leaves shows some thumbing with brown ink stains on some leaves a water stain in the lower outer corner of leaves 81 and 82 not affecting the text.
