Abraham Bosse 1604-1676 famous for his etchings was also the first teacher of perspective at the Academy Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture that was founded in 1648. Bosse a mathematician and geometrician was extremely interested in the work of Girard Desargues and published several works on perspective. The present work was published in 1665. He wanted it to be the definite text on the subject that he taught but he was expelled from the Academy for lack of flexibility before its publication. Most of the 47 pages of the introduction deal with the principal errors that painters can make if they are not aware of the rules of perspective. The 67 plates and their explications deal with the necessary knowledge to apply perspective correctly. And these echo the lessons Bosse gave to his students at the Academy. He also deals with perspective in architecture. chez l'auteur
1801réf. 3776First Portuguese Translation of Bosse's Engraving Manual BOSSE Abraham. Tratado da Gravura a agua forte e a buril e em maneira negra com o modo de construir as prensas modernas e de imprimir em talho doce. Nova ediçao traduzida do francez. por José Joaquim Viegas Menezes. Lisbon Arco do Cego 1801. Tall 8vo 208 x 152 mm engraved title pp. x ix 1 189 1 errata with 21 engraved plates; plates printed on slightly darker stock; a wide-margined clean copy in recent full calf gilt. First Portuguese translation of Bosse's classic introduction to copperplate etching and engraving Traité des manières de graver en taille douce. This Portuguese translation by José Joaquim Viegas Menezes is clearly taken from the Jombert edition and reproduces the same plates though newly engraved with subtle adaptations; an extensive introduction precedes the text. Bosse's treatise the first manual of copperplate etching and engraving and the printing of intaglio plates was first published in French in 1645. It was aimed both at the professional engraver and at the amateur and is extensively illustrated with detailed engravings based on Bosse's own designs. A second edition of 1701 had contained revisions by LeClerc the third of 1745 those of the engraver Cochin. The Jombert edition added two new plates by Louis-Marin Bonnet the inventor of the Crayon manner of colour printing and a separate chapter on this method of colour printing. In addition to a wealth of technical information the work includes views of the engraving studio and the copperplate press. As adaptations were made to all subsequent editions the work has remained an important introduction to print-making which is of practical use to the printmaker even today. Thick 8vo 160 x 105 mm. late 18th-cent. marbled boards extremities a little rubbed & worn. Dresden: C. G. Nitzsche 1765. An important German edition of Bosse’s Traité des manières de graver en Taille douce 1st ed. in French: 1645 considerably augmented for the German audience. This work was translated and published by Carl Gottlieb Nitzsche from the 1745 Cochin edition. The Cochin edition was the first to promote etching with hard etching-ground vernis dur instead of the soft etching-ground vernis mol to imitate line engraving. It also featured long sections on Le Blon’s color printing and the refining of mezzotint illustration. In the present book we find four illustrations of the rolling press which Cochin had updated to account for several design upgrades. There are also several diagrams and cross-sections of printing presses. This book is richly illustrated with plates and vignettes executed by Carl Gottfried Nestler 1730-80 that depict various techniques equipment and the interiors of print shops. Nestler reworked the engraved title-page from the 1645 first edition for this book’s frontispiece. A very good copy internally fresh. Unidentified engraved bookplates with the initials “G. F.” on front and rear paste-downs. ⧠Benezit Dictionary of Artists Vol. 10 p. 258 Nestler. unknown books
