1880rif. 2101Amsterdam The Hague Brussels Vienna and other places 1880. Preserved in a contemporary portfolio with red sprinkled boards held together by two olive green ribbons which also serve as closing ties a paper title label on the front together with two other labels. With ca. 100 contemporary notes and letters several with envelopes. Extensive archive of approximately one hundred letters and notes concerning the Vorsterman family assembled by the genealogist and heraldist Anthonie Abraham Vorsterman van Oyen 1845-1912. The family included the Antwerp printer Willem Vorsterman d. 1543 and the Dutch-Flemish engraver Lucas Vorsterman 1595-1675. Much of the material consists of replies from archivists and librarians to inquiries made by Vorsterman van Oyen in the course of his genealogical research. A large group of letters is written by Nicolaas de Roever 1850-1893 municipal archivist of Amsterdam. The archive gives a good impression of genealogical research in the late nineteenth century when information had to be collected through correspondence with archives libraries and fellow researchers. Vorsterman van Oyen was one of the leading Dutch genealogists of his time and published numerous works on genealogy and heraldry including his three-volume Stam- en wapenboek van aanzienlijke Nederlandsche familiën 1885-1890. He was also one of the founders of the genealogical and heraldic society De Nederlandsche Leeuw founded in 1883.Also included are two resolutions of the States of Holland from 1778 and 1780 respectively granting Abraham Vorsterman Jacobs permission to organise a hare hunt in the woods of Brederode. With the bookplate of Vorsterman van Oyen mounted on the inside of the front board. The portfolio is somewhat worn and with multiple labels; it was probably re-used multiple times. The letters and notes in good condition with only occasional browning.l Cf.
