Fold marks tearing and losses along fold marks second leaf with minor hole after opening not affecting text otherwise a good letter. An early and interesting letter written by Ohio merchant Abraham B. Galinger to his friend “Caiptain Suspane Smal” in “Caipe Cod.” In Ohio Galinger sold “merchandise in partnership” with his brother. He later moved to Iowa where he opened a pharmaceutical business “Galinger & Snodgrass.” By 1860 he lived in California working as a lumber dealer and later miner. In this letter Galinger writes that business is good yet they still intend to move it to New York or Philadelphia within the next few months. He also mentions that he had some “calicoes” likely calico textile stolen from him but later recovered both them and forty dollars. Overall an interesting and early letter connecting Ohio to Cape Cod. Text of the letter: “I take the liberty to write to you to inform you that I enjoy good health at this present time and hope that these few lines may find you and your wife and family enjoying the sam sic great blessing. I am now in Somerset Perry County selling Merchandise in Partnership with my Brother we have done good business here yet with all this we intent sic to close our business here by the first of April next when we expect to remove to New York or Philadelphia wher sic we will again commence business. Wher sic I will be happy to see you and your family if you should visit the city at any time. If your son Suspin is at home if you would be so kind as to tell him I was very sory sic that I did not have an opportunity of seeing him again befor sic I left Cape Cod. I should be happy to receive from him a letter. Newes sic I have none except that I had som sic calicoes stolen from me but fortunately I recovered the Goods and forty dollars in the bagain sic. In all my journeying I have found no place I prefered sic to Cape Cod. “My best respect to you also to your wife and family Caiptain sic S. Smal “Give my best respect to your son in Law and wife and his daughter Henriette tell her that I have not forgotten the promise that I made her and if an opportunity presents itself I will perform what I promised. If you please on the reception of this write to me concerning your health and family. My address is Abraham Galinger Somerset Perry County Ohio” unknown
1982réf. 506734Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities 1982. Paperback. FINE. 119pp. Sewn binding in printed wraps. Spine a bit toned text tanned as expected very clean and sharp otherwise. Scarce in trade. 'Galen's commentary on Hippocrates' 'peri aeron udaton topon' has not been found in the original Greek or in the translation made from Greek into Syriac by Hunain ibn Ishq but is extant in an Arabic translation made by Hubaysh al-A'sam ninth century a Hebrew translation made from the Arabic in 1299 by Solomon ha-Me'ati and finally a Latin translation of the Hebrew text made by Moses Amram Alatino 1529-1605. Only the last text which is four removes from the original Greek has been available in print; it can be found in the ninth Juntine edition of Galen's works. Wasserstein provides a critical edition of the Hebrew text which exists in only one manuscript Oxford Bodleian Library Opp. Add. 18 fol. He furnishes the Hebrew text with a literal English translation and writes an extensive commentary which is conveniently placed below the text. This commentary is above all philological: the Hebrew which is often barely intelligible because of its closeness to the Arabic is explained. For the lemmata from Hippocrates the original Greek the two Arabic versions the 'younger' Latin translation and the Hebrew translation of Nathan ha-Me'ati father of Solomon are brought into use; for Galen's commentary W. unfortunately makes little use of the recently discovered Arabic version Cairo Tal'at tibb 550 but he refers to Alatino's Latin translation which at least is a witness to another Hebrew manuscript. Sometimes citations of and parallels to the text of Galen's commentary in later medical writers provide guidance for interpreting the text. Amongst these writers are Erotianus and Oribasius amongst the Greeks 'All ibn Rabbn al-Tabari 'Ali ibn Ridwăn and 'Abd al-Latif al-Baghdädi in Arabic and Moses ibn Ezra and Maimonides in Hebrew. W. collects the Arabic and Hebrew citations of and references to the work in an appendix. In spite of these aids there are still many passages in the Hebrew which remain difficult to understand. W. is scrupulous in pointing out the words which make no sense to him and adds several new words especially transliterations of Arabic terms to the standard dictionaries of the Hebrew language. Commentary on the medical content is not extensive and is usually restricted to the citation of passages on the same topics in other Greek medical works. W. appears to have the Classicist especially in mind in writing this work. He quotes extensively from Greek writings without providing translations. Until the Arabic text of Galen's commentary on Hippocrates 'peri aeron udaton topon' is published W.'s edition is the nearest we will be able to come to the original Greek text. Occasionally the Hebrew translation gives a term 'used by the Christians' alongside the Arabic term for a phenomenon sec pp. 29 and 83 but otherwise there is no evidence that the translator has been other than faithful to his source. W. takes pains to uncover the original Greek terminology wherever possible. He identifies citations from Hesiod's Erga and Homer's Iliad in Galen's commentary pp. 81 and 85. A reference in the text to a writer on meteorology called 'Nicodemus' has not been identified and the name might have been given in error for Theophrastus. W. concludes his edition with notes on the ha-Me'ati family and their translations a substantial bibliography an index of names and subjects and indexes of Hebrew and Greek terms and names. The edition is presented clearly and the Hebrew Greek and Roman typefaces the Arabic is in transliteration are pleasant to read. C.S.F. Burnett review in The Classical Review.
