Best.-Nr. 1343Europe: Antwerp Joannem Bapt. Vrientium/ Vrients. 1601. Copper engraved minature map by Phillip Galle of Abruzzo from" Epitome theatri Orteliani praecipuarum orbis regionum delinaetiones. . Editio ultima" Latin text to verso describing the succeeding map. . Dark impression overall toning. The first edition of the"Epitome" in 1577 a reduced format atlas with minature maps of Abraham Ortelius's "Theatrum" is believed to have been the initiative of the engraver Phillip Galle who asked Peter Heyns to write the text. Ortelius had fled to England in 1576 having taken refuge there from Spanish oppression and may have been unaware of the plan of his two friends. The pocket atlas was a a commmercial success and was reprinted several times with Galle adding many new maps and replacing some. Jan. Baptist Vrients bought the rights and plates of the Epitome from Phillip Galle in 1601 . he published 4 editions using the Galle plates of which this is the first with Latin text. 1953Best.-Nr. 00007905Amsterdam: North-Holland Publishing Company 1953. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 8vo. 7 viii-ix 2 xii 1-479 1 pp. Bound in yellow cloth with narrow rule border on the front board in black gold lettering on the spine inset in a solid black rectangle with black and gold rules at the top and bottom of the spine Fraenkel was a mathematician perhaps best-known as the F in ZF or Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory an axiomatization of set theory intended to avoid paradoxes one of the most famous being Russell's paradox. Fraenkel's most famous result was to prove the independence of the axiom of choice from ZF i.e. he showed that the axiom of choice cannot be proven or its negation proven from ZF. Together with the axiom of choice the system ZFC is a suitable foundation for mathematics and has been the subject of extensive study in foundational research over the past century. This book was written for advanced students in mathematics and philosophy and is intended to introduce such students to axiomatic set theory. A presentable copy of this uncommon book by one of the seminal figures in the foundations of mathematics. A Very Good book with a bit of wear to the boards and a previous owner's name written on the front pastedown in a Good dust jacket with a chip to the top of the spine panel most of the author's name is gone but the title is still present along with fading and a few areas of minor discoloration.
