Charles-Frobert Patris Chez les marchands de nouveautés Imprimerie de Doublet Paris 1801 1814 1821 12.6 x 19.6 cm Relié Three works bound in one volume comprising one first French translation and two first editions. Some rubbing and soiling to the binding light foxing. A curious gathering of two scientific texts one devoted to the telegraph and the other to optical instruments together with a polemical pamphlet by the founder of the Collège Stanislas. In his Treatise on Telegraphs first published in Swedish in 1796 the poet and academician Abraham Niclas Edelcrantz set out his research on the optical telegraph. Developed by the Frenchman Claude Chappe from 1791 onwards the optical telegraph is the forerunner of the electric telegraph which would be invented more than thirty years later. As its name suggests it relied entirely on the visual observation of signals. These were formed by operators by means of articulated arms mounted at the top of towers some ten kilometres apart; observed through a spyglass the coded signals were reproduced in order to be relayed to the next station. Having learned of Chappe's work Edelcrantz devised as early as 1794 an optical telegraph of a different kind: he replaced the articulated arms with ten iron shutters open or closed whose combinations yielded 1024 signals corresponding to a code of letters words and phrases. He also proposed a solution for using the telegraph at night by lighting it with lamps a possibility of which Chappe's system did not make regular use. Thanks to Edelcrantz Sweden became one of the first countries after France to equip itself with a telegraph network. This 1801 edition accompanied by one table and four folding diagrams gives the French translation of the treatise - its first translation into a foreign language preceding the German one of 1802. The operation of Edelcrantz's telegraph depended to a large extent on optical instruments which made it possible to observe the signals at a distance of several kilometres. Bound in the same volume the 1821 Catalogue général des objets de sciences et arts by Jean Gabriel Augustin Chevallier is devoted precisely to these instruments. This optician whose name survives today in the firm ""L'Ingénieur Chevallier"" enjoyed in his day the renown of optician to the King and the royal family. At 1 quai de l'Horloge he sold all sorts of optical apparatus of his own making: microscopes telescopes magnifying glasses spectacles monocles pince-nez camerae obscurae intended ""to draw and paint in miniature"" as well as achromatic glasses that is to say spyglasses. Curiously a work of an altogether different nature is bound between the two texts devoted to instruments. Published anonymously in 1814 the Mémoire sur l'université is a polemical pamphlet directed against the Imperial University written by Abbé Liautard who in 1804 founded the Institution Notre-Dame-des-Champs which became the Collège Stanislas in 1822. In 1808 the Imperial University secured a monopoly on education required private establishments to send their pupils to attend classes at the lycées and subjected them to a twofold fiscal burden. Liautard a priest who had himself received a brilliant education notably at the Collège Sainte-Barbe had long evaded the obligation to send his pupils to the Lycée Napoléon. In this memoir whose publication coincided with the fall of the First Empire Liautard castigated ""this colossal University wanton daughter of irreligion despotism and taxation"" and did not temper his vehemence where the former Emperor was concerned: ""Of all Buonaparte's conceptions the most frightening to the thinking man the most profoundly anti-social in a word the most wo Charles-Frobert PatrisChez les marchands de nouveautésImprimerie de Doublet hardcover

Abraham Bosse 1604-1676 famous for his etchings was also the first teacher of perspective at the Academy Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture that was founded in 1648. Bosse a mathematician and geometrician was extremely interested in the work of Girard Desargues and published several works on perspective. The present work was published in 1665. He wanted it to be the definite text on the subject that he taught but he was expelled from the Academy for lack of flexibility before its publication. Most of the 47 pages of the introduction deal with the principal errors that painters can make if they are not aware of the rules of perspective. The 67 plates and their explications deal with the necessary knowledge to apply perspective correctly. And these echo the lessons Bosse gave to his students at the Academy. He also deals with perspective in architecture. chez l'auteur

1844réf. ABC_45290Leiden & Düsseldorf 1844. Elephant folio 55.5 × 73.5 cm. Arnz & Co. Stored loosely in the original publishers cloth-backed printed boards. Tinted lithographed title-page with a pictorial border comprising 11 scenes of hawking by J. B. Sonderland 2 hand-coloured lithographed plates of falconry equipment by Portman and Von Wouw and 10 of 12 hand-coloured lithographed plates of hawks by Wendel after Joseph Wolf 8 mounted on paperboard. 4 90 VI 2 pp. First and only edition of a superb work the finest work on falconry that has ever been produced both on account of the beauty of the plates and general accuracy of the text. The lifesize illustrations of the birds are by far the finest ever produced in any book on falconry. It is impossible to describe the mellowness and beauty of the colourings Schwerdt. This famous book on falconry by H. Schlegel and A.H. Verster van Wulverhorst is known chiefly for its lifesize coloured illustrations of birds of prey lithographs after watercolours by Josef Wolf. The extensive research in the literature and the description of procedures by two laymen in the field of falconry still cause amazement among falconers. The work contains 17 illustrations: successively the tinted title-page two coloured plates with hunting gear and falconer's equipment two tinted plates of pictures of the activities of the Loo Hawking Club not present and 12 coloured plates with images of birds of prey in their natural surroundings. The last twelve plates show magnificent figures of hawks. Perhaps the most famous is that of the Groenlandais or white gyrfalcon which Tuijn shows to have been based on a portrait of the bird by Pierre Louis Dubourcq 1815-73. The other plates are from originals by Josef Wolf 1820-99 the German artist who ranks among the world's finest animal painters Jackson.Covers of portfolio somewhat rubbed and stained; spine cloth and extremeties professionally restored. Some foxing and browning in the plates; several marginal tears and chips professionally repaired; rebacked. Lacks 2 lithographed hawking scenes by J. Dillmann after Sonderland.
