rif. 04374Paris: Maison Martinet - Hautecoeur Frères 1860. The Animals of the Jardin des Plantes With Twenty-Four Superb Hand-Colored Lithographed Plates An Exceptionally Rare French Juvenile Natural History ADAM Albert illustrator. ROSTAING Jules. First edition. Large oblong quarto 10 3/16 x 13 1/2 inches; 259 x 343 mm. iv 30 1 table 1 blank pp. With twenty-four superb hand-colored lithographed plates by Albert Adam many containing multiple images and heightened with gum arabic. Some light foxing to the text leaves only; the plates exceptionally bright and clean. Publisher's black pebble-grain cloth front cover elaborately pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt with a central wreath enclosing the title and surrounded by vignettes of animals and their habitats; lower cover with central decoration stamped in blind; yellow coated endpapers. Front inner hinge expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Neat early ink inscription on front fly-leaf dated 1860. An excellent copy. A wonderfully evocative pictorial tour of the celebrated Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes in Paris presenting its exotic inhabitants in a series of richly hand-colored lithographs. Rather than illustrating the animals simply as isolated zoological specimens Adam frequently places them within their enclosures and surroundings sometimes accompanied by their keepers and elegantly dressed visitors giving the book considerable interest as a visual record of the nineteenth-century zoological garden. The twenty-four plates encompass an extraordinary range of animal life including bison deer moose antelope llamas goats giraffes buffalo elephants hippopotamuses rhinoceroses camels zebras donkeys lions tigers leopards jackals wolves hyenas orangutans monkeys dogs birds of prey crocodiles snakes gazelles and numerous other mammals and birds. Among the most striking compositions is the giraffe plate in which three giraffes occupy their enclosure while fashionably dressed visitors observe them with smaller animal studies arranged around the principal scene. Another spectacular plate gathers lions tigers and other great cats around their barred enclosure supplemented by charming subsidiary scenes of visitors and keepers. The elephant plate similarly combines its monumental central animals with smaller studies of hippopotamuses and other pachyderms. The deer and moose plate demonstrates particularly well Adam's attractive combination of zoological observation with picturesque landscape. The application of gum arabic over the hand-coloring gives portions of the animals foliage and costumes a luminous almost enameled appearance characteristic of the finest French juvenile color-plate books of the period. Albert Adam 1833-1900 was the son of the celebrated French painter lithographer and caricaturist Jean-Victor Adam 1801-1866 with whom he worked and whom he assisted with lithographic commissions. In Le Jardin des Plantes en Estampes the younger Adam combines accomplished lithographic draughtsmanship with an engaging sense of narrative: animals keepers and spectators together create miniature scenes of life at the Paris menagerie rather than merely conventional zoological portraits. The accompanying text by Jules Rostaing provides descriptions and histories of the animals represented transforming Adam's spectacular series of plates into an educational introduction to the inhabitants of one of Europe's most celebrated zoological collections. Exceptionally rare. OCLC records just one copy at the Morgan Library & Museum New York - the copy formerly in the collection of Gordon N. Ray. The work is apparently unknown to Denise's bibliography of the Jardin des Plantes. A particularly desirable example of nineteenth-century French juvenile natural history combining twenty-four exceptionally attractive hand-colored lithographs contemporary zoological observation scenes of Parisian social life and a handsome pictorial gilt publisher's binding. rif. 22296143 x 97 mm. wide margins. Slightly worn; edges browned. In very good condition overall. Possibly after the same painting on which the woodcut portrait in his Compendium Musicae of 1632 is based. Gumpelzhaimer spent most of his active life in Augsburg where he was Kantor and Präzeptor at the school and church of St. Anna from 1581 until his death. "He was probably best known to German musicians of and after his time through his Compendium musicae. . The richness of musical activity of St Anna is indicated not only by Gumpelzhaimer's music but also by the extensive holdings of the church library during his 44 years there. A handwritten inventory was started by Gumpelzhaimer in 1620 and continued by Faust in 1625. This list includes in addition to many printed collections several large manuscript books of polyphonic music in score notation. Two of these books have survived one begun in 1599 and the other completed in 1624. They were copied out mostly by Gumpelzhaimer and contain compositions by many prominent musicians of the time."
