1794rif. 178101Edinburgh: From the transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 1794. A presentation copy from the elite social circles of Adam Smith's Edinburgh First separate edition presentation copy inscribed by the recipient "Alex. Fraser Tytler from the author" on the half-title. Tytler Stewart and Smith were all founder members of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783. Stewart's account is the first biographical study of Smith the first work to shape the philosopher's popular image and a formative influence on the first generation of Smithian thinkers. Dugald Stewart 1753-1828 was an extremely early devotee of Smithian economics drawing on the Wealth of Nations in his Edinburgh lectures from 1778 onwards. His Account helped form the popular image of Smith as an ally of common-sense philosophy and an opponent of Hume. It is the first such work listed by Vanderblue who places the journal printing first and this offprint second. This offprint is part of a volume of works collected by Alexander Fraser Tytler Lord Woodhouselee 1747-1813 a Judge Advocate of Scotland at the turn of the 19th century. Tytler occupied many of the same elite Edinburgh circles as Stewart and Smith: in 1780 he joined Stewart on the faculty of Edinburgh University and the three men lived and worked alongside one another in the city until Smith's death in 1790. Tytler has provided a manuscript index at the beginning of the volume and his unobtrusive annotations occur throughout: on page 20 of the Account he takes issue with Stewart's depiction of Smith's analysis of human sympathy and provides his own interpretation. A full inventory of the other works is available on request. Quarto 252 x 192 mm pp. 85 1. 1776rif. 194461Leipzig: Weidmann Erben und Reich 1776-78-92. The first translation of the core text of modern economics First edition in German of The Wealth of Nations constituting the first translation of the work into any language. This copy in an unrestored contemporary German binding is complete with the supplementary third volume which translates the 1783 Additions and Corrections to. the Wealth of Nations. The translation was undertaken by Johann Friedrich Schiller a cousin of the poet Friedrich Schiller. It was completed "in two parts Books I-III appearing within the same year that the original appeared the second volume with Books IV and V then being published two years later. Schiller had worked in London and was acquainted with the 'admirable author of the Theory of Moral Sentiments whose personal appreciation and friendship he counted among the happiest circumstances of his life' preface to second volume translated. He obviously maintained his connections in London for he explains the delayed appearance of the second volume by his expectation that Smith given the level of demand for his book would quickly prepare a second edition taking account of comments from both English and German readers. However Smith had returned to Edinburgh from London and taken a post there as Commissioner for Customs which development prompted Schiller to proceed with his second volume hoping that he could summarize the eventual revisions in a later supplement" Tribe p. 125. Smith's corrected text did not appear until the third edition of 1784 although the revisions had been issued separately the previous year as Additions and Corrections. Poor sales of the first two parts delayed Schiller's translation of the Additions and Corrections until 1792. The publishers combined it with unsold sheets of the first two volumes to form complete sets though it was probably also available separately. The publishers intended Condorcet's notes to form a second division of the third volume hence the title-page wording "Dritten Bandes. Erste Abtheilung" but this was aborted. German reviewers responded to the translation favourably but interpreted Smith as a Physiocrat rather than as the herald of a new school of economic thought. Perhaps for this reason sales were modest. Smith's reputation grew in Germany in the nineteenth century; this translation was the first of 15 German translations and editions published by the 1930s Tribe p. 120. 3 vols bound in 2 octavo 201 x 119 mm. Contemporary marbled paper boards green paper labels lettered in gilt edges speckled brown. Neat contemporary ownership signature "Müller" on the front free endpaper of the second volume. Worn with loss to labels but the bindings themselves still strong contents toned as usual yet without marking. A very desirable copy. Goldsmiths' 11394; Kress S4873; Tribe 12 & 46.
