I otherwise complete early ownership inscriptions in pen to front endpapers a nice clean example; contemporary tree-calf contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces and volume labels to spine joints a little rubbed very good. Smith's masterpiece the 'first and greatest classic of modern economic thought' PMM. A handsome set bound in contemporary tree-calf. As the title explains the work is fundamentally an investigation into what makes certain nations prosperous. Smith's originality lies in locating the roots of this comparative wealth in the specialisation of labour which had occurred in developed economies for the 'annual labour of every nation is the fund which originally supplies it with all the necessaries and conveniences of life which it annually consumes and which consist always either in the immediate produce of that labour or in what is purchased with that produce from other nations' Introduction. 'The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory. his work is the first major expression of it. He begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange. Labour represents the three essential elementswages profit and rentand these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy Smith passes to its matter'stock'which compasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control' PMM. Best.-Nr. 120951London Printed for A. Millar and T. Cadell in the Strand and A. Kincaid and J. Bell Edinburgh 1768. . Third edition corrected; 8vo 21 x 13.5 cm; dated ownership inscription in pen to title related armorial bookplate to front pastedown slight dampstaining to lower right corner; contemporary sprinkled calf gilt spine in 6 compartments contrasting red morocco lettering-piecespine head cap slightly chipped with minor loss a little rubbed very good; vii 1 464pp. The third edition printed the year after the first of the Scottish Enlightenment philosopher Adam Ferguson's 1723-1816 major contribution to political theory. A friend of Adam Smith and David Hume Ferguson was Professor of Pneumatics and Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh from 1764 to 1785 when he was succeeded by his erstwhile student Dugald Stewart. His seminal Essay on the History of Civil Society offered a 'non-deterministic historical account of the way nations advance morally and materially towards the state of commerce refinement and liberty associated with eighteenth-century Britain' ODNB. Ferguson rejected both the legalistic accounts of the emergence of governments through social contract theory and Rousseauian notions predicated on natural law and moral and economic evolutionism. Instead he looked to the interplay of a host of factors from moral culture to geography to explain the rise of the modern nation state. His Essay proved popular running to seven editions within his lifetime and helped to secure Ferguson's status as a serious scholar both in Britain and on the continent. The book proved particularly influential with the American Founding Fathers we know for instance that Thomas Jefferson had a copy of this the third edition in his library. Ferguson had befriended Benjamin Franklin on the latter's visit to Edinburgh in 1771 and in 1778 he was invited to accompany the Carlisle commission to Philadelphia to negotiate an agreement with George Washington and the Continental Congress. A lovely unrestored example in the original sprinkled calf binding with contemporary provenance for the barrister James Whalley of Middle Temple. ESTC T75304. London, Printed for A. Millar and T. Zinke 448 Strand 1811. . 3 vols; 8vo 21.5 x 14 cm; lxxi 1 360; vi 514; v 1 448 50pp. An early critical edition of Smith's masterpiece a cornerstone text in the development of modern economic theory and political philosophy. Wealth of Nations 'begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control' PMM. The edition opens with a 'Life' of the author and an English translation of Germain Garnier's 'Short View of the Doctrine of Smith' a comparative study of the Scottish philosopher and the French physiocrats. Garnier observes the 'great difference between the doctrine of Smith and of the economists lies in the point from which they set out. The latter go back to the soil as the primary source of all wealth; while the former regards labour as the universal agent which in every case produces it' p.l. Kress B.5916. London, Printed for J. As the title explains the Wealth of Nations is fundamentally an investigation into why certain countries are more prosperous than others. The text is taken from the fourth edition originally printed in 1786. Smith 1723-1790 died on 17th July the year preceding the publication of this Basel edition but it seems evident from the title-page that this work was in the press before news of Smith's death reached Tourneisen.
