Publisher's cloth in dust jacket very good light edgewear to jacket spine color paled from light exposure. Fondly inscribed to Mrs. Ellen S. Whitall in 1941. Mrs. Whitall and Allen were friends in South Carolina and Allen gave to her the bound manuscript of "Anthony Adverse" the subject of a New Yorker article in 1934. Major Whitall was a well known book collector and bibliophile. Struck by Allen's poem "The Blindman" published in 1923 Whitall established "The Blindman Prize" a $250 annual prize for the best poem administered by the Poetry Society of South Carolina. It is clear from all this that Allen was very close to the Whitalls. Allen's account of the American front in France in the summer of 1918. Allen was born in Pittsburgh in 1889 graduated from Pitt in 1915 and served as a 2nd lieutenant in the 18th Pennsylvania Infantry on the Mexican border in 1916 during the Pancho Villa Expedition. That year he published a collection of poems Ballads of the Border. He also served as a lieutenant and later a company commander of Company "B" of the 1st Battalion 111th Infantry Regiment of the 28th keystone Division United States Army during World War I and fought in the Aisne-Marne offensive July-August 1918. After that he taught English at the University of Pittsburgh spent some time teaching in South Carolina where he met Dubose Heyward who became a close friend and collaborator. He published widely both poety and novels including a poetry collection that won the Yale Younger Poets award; his novel "Anthony Adverse" 1933 is probably his best known and most accomplished work considered one of the great examples of the modern historical novel. 1955ref. acs243St. Louis: The C. V. Mosby Company 1955. Third Edition. Octavo navy blue cloth hardcover silver letters and illustration to upper cover 596 pp. Near Fine with darkened endpapers. From Preface: Since the last edition of this book was prepared many additional psychopaths have been observed pursuing their vivd patterns of maladjustment. A few encouraging reports of successful therapeutic measures have emerged. The number of patients concerned is however too small to furnish substantial evidence that a regularly effective means of dealing with the psychopath’s disorder has been discovered. It is my increasingly strong belief that the immediate and practical goal of all concerned with this problem should be to promote a general understanding that these people have a social disability that is real and extremely serious. Adequate means must be provided to control legally these severely disordered patients like those long ago provided and available today for far less incompetent patients of other types. Even if a truly curative therapy is never devised perhaps half the damage crime waste useless disorder and sorrow caused now by psychopaths could be eliminated by a reasonably wise use of such legal measures for control. The C. V. Mosby Company, 1955. Third Edition. hardcover

Glossary. Note on the Illustrations. Published in association with the National Army Museum London. Charles Allen born 1940 is a British freelance writer and popular historian who lives in London. His British parents were both born in India and his prolific works focus on the British Raj. Allen's work focuses largely on India and the Indian Subcontinent in general. Although Captain Albert Hervey rose to the rank of Major General this memoir covers his first impressionable years on the sub-continent in the heady days before the Indian Mutiny. Hervey vividly recalls his early experiences. From the duties of a young subaltern in barracks to a hard day's shikar in the padifields from the giddy whirl of balls and mess nights to the chill of executions at dawn; and from the comic vexations of drunken servants to the medieval pageantry of an oriental army on the line of march. Hervey's evocations of a soldier's works is vibrant with the sights and sounds and minutiae of a way of life that seemed set to last for ever. Michael Joseph hardcover
