Sans adopter leurs doctrines, il puisa chez eux des idées qui eurent de l'influence sur le cours de sa vie.L'auteur fut, avec Young, le premier auteur anglais à annoncer la veine romantique des ténèbres et des tombeaux. Ses Méditations assez noires sont précédées de la biographie de Young.Portrait-frontispice gravé en taille-douce.
