"Thomas Herveys THE BOOK OF CHRISTMAS is remembered today for the wonderful illustrations by Robert Seymour 1798-1836 one of the most successful caricaturists of his time. Herveys text gives an exhaustive historical account of old English Christmas customs: some -- like the feasting on roast beef and turkey plum pudding and mince pies -- still flourishing; others -- like waits carol singing at night and mumming -- almost forgotten. Seymours illustrations completed just a few months before his suicide as he was working on Dickenss PICKWICK PAPERS capture the spirit and joy of the season. From the coach load of Norfolk turkeys to the sleepy waits singers in the light of the street lantern to the merry old gentleman enjoying Christmas by his fire he provides a delightful selection of holiday scenes. THE BOOK OF CHRISTMAS first published in 1836 and reprinted the following year was an early attempt to record and preserve the old customs. As the Victorian revival of the holiday gathered pace during the 1840s many more histories of Christmas festivities and practices were published. They were often bound and illustrated as attractive gift books and so helped to establish a new tradition of the Christmas publishing season BRITISH LIBRARY. William Spooner hardcover books

When she determined to marry the Duke of Kingston Elizabeth feared the scandal of divorce from her first husband Augustus Hervey later Earl of Bristol who wanted a divorce so she instituted a suit of jactitation against him. His negative response ignored she took an oath that she was unmarried and the court so declared her. She married the Duke of Kingston in 1769 and he died in 1770 and left her a substantial estate on the condition that she remain a widow. The duke's nephew Mr. Evelyn Meadow brought suit against her for bigamy shortly after the duke's death while she was traveling in Italy. She returned to England to stand trial. Found guilty she would have been "burned on the hand" but she claimed the privilege of her peerage which served to exempt her from corporal punishment. She continued a life of travel and adventure until her sudden death in Paris in 1788. Famous because of this trial Kingston was often depicted directly or indirectly in popular and serious literature. 1955réf. acs243St. Louis: The C. V. Mosby Company 1955. Third Edition. Octavo navy blue cloth hardcover silver letters and illustration to upper cover 596 pp. Near Fine with darkened endpapers. From Preface: Since the last edition of this book was prepared many additional psychopaths have been observed pursuing their vivd patterns of maladjustment. A few encouraging reports of successful therapeutic measures have emerged. The number of patients concerned is however too small to furnish substantial evidence that a regularly effective means of dealing with the psychopath’s disorder has been discovered. It is my increasingly strong belief that the immediate and practical goal of all concerned with this problem should be to promote a general understanding that these people have a social disability that is real and extremely serious. Adequate means must be provided to control legally these severely disordered patients like those long ago provided and available today for far less incompetent patients of other types. Even if a truly curative therapy is never devised perhaps half the damage crime waste useless disorder and sorrow caused now by psychopaths could be eliminated by a reasonably wise use of such legal measures for control.
