1955Best.-Nr. acs243St. Louis: The C. V. Mosby Company 1955. Third Edition. Octavo navy blue cloth hardcover silver letters and illustration to upper cover 596 pp. Near Fine with darkened endpapers. From Preface: Since the last edition of this book was prepared many additional psychopaths have been observed pursuing their vivd patterns of maladjustment. A few encouraging reports of successful therapeutic measures have emerged. The number of patients concerned is however too small to furnish substantial evidence that a regularly effective means of dealing with the psychopath’s disorder has been discovered. It is my increasingly strong belief that the immediate and practical goal of all concerned with this problem should be to promote a general understanding that these people have a social disability that is real and extremely serious. Adequate means must be provided to control legally these severely disordered patients like those long ago provided and available today for far less incompetent patients of other types. Even if a truly curative therapy is never devised perhaps half the damage crime waste useless disorder and sorrow caused now by psychopaths could be eliminated by a reasonably wise use of such legal measures for control. Front page detached from staples front page and a bit of the second page with scattered ink markings moderate chipping toning and bumping along the edges thus about very good the text largely clean throughout. An early 22-page treatment script for the famed film Shanghai Express written by Harry Hervey who is generally only credited with writing the short story from which the film was based. The second page includes a list of characters which differs slightly from the film most notably a character named Laura Mason who seems to be the film's character Shanghai Lily played by Marlene Dietrich. Also different is the character Captain Esme Simpson who appears to be the film's character Captain Donald Harvey played by Clive Brook. The film directed by Josef von Sternberg and released in February of 1932 also featured noted Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong as Hui Fei. An interesting piece of Pre-Code Era Hollywood likely printed in very small numbers for a select group of people. unknown books

Inscribed signed and dated by Allen on the front end-paper in the year of publication "Inscribed to G. Selmer Fougner with the cordial best regards and best wishes of his ever Hervey Allen September 16 1933". Gustav Selmer Fougner 1884-1941 was an author and journalist who wrote for the New York Herald and the New York Sun where he was the chief European correspondent during WWI. He was probably best known however for his wine critic column in the Sun "Along the Wine Trail" as well as his 1941 book "Dining Out In New York". Laid in is publisher's review slip. 1932Best.-Nr. 002745New York: Farrar & Rinehart 1932. Book. Fine in Wraps as Issued. Stapled Wrappers. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. Limited and Numbered First Edition. #619/1000 copies printed " for presentation to friends of the author and the publishers". SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on verso of front wrapper "Autograph for Eugene L. Delafield Esq. by Hervey Allen". Delafield was a noted New York book collector 1907-2001 the bulk of whose collection now resides in the Yale Collection of American Literature at the Beinecke Library. Laid in is a 1 page letter signed with the initials "H.A." that reads- "One of the few remaining copies of my first book- newspaper reviews with the exception of the "Weakling" which was printed in El Paso and sold to the troops along the Mexican Border in 1916. As you remember I told you I destroyed perhaps foolishly a few copies that remained in my possession and have been able to get ahold of only one or two since then that turned up in an old trunk. I am not anxious to have this book known as it contains verse written when I was very immature." On the back of this letter in a different hand presumably Delafield's is "written circa 1925". Indeed very few copies of Allen's 1st book survive today and after a promising start as a poet Allen turned to fiction and became best known for his novel "Anthony Adverse" which became a huge best-seller and was made into a memorable movie winning 4 Oscars.
