1922réf. h46339NY: New York: James F. Drake Inc 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. One of 350 printed by Rudge typography by Bruce Rogers. 8vo seagreen spine over patterned boards good with some wear along the outer joints bookplate of the Hervey Allen Collection of the University of Pittsburgh no deaccession stamp but we purchased this in a large lot of duplicates from this collection about 10 years ago from Pitt and this probably avoided the stamp from being in a slipcase. Also with leather bookplate of W. Van R. Whitall. Signed by Allen on the title page and inscribed in pencil also on title page by Bruce Rogers "Advance copy -- for Major Wm. Van R. Whitall. Bruce Rogers. St. Patrick's Day in the morning - 1922-" and also with "No. 1. Hervey Allen" in pencil on flyleaf and additional note in pencil by Allen on pastedown "Written in 1916-1917 just after my return from the Border. An early poem. This is an early copy bound in green unlike the others." In handsome quarter burgundy morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. Great association copy: Whitall's wife and Allen were childhood friends in South Carolina and Allen gave to her the bound manuscript of "Anthony Adverse" the subject of a New Yorker article in 1934. Major Whitall was a well known book collector and bibliophile. Struck by Allen's poem "The Blindman" published in 1923 Whitall established "The Blindman Prize" a $250 annual prize for the best poem administered by the Poetry Society of South Carolina. It is clear from all this that Allen was very close to the Whitalls. It's extra special that this is the first copy off the press and was inscribed by both Rogers and Allen. James F.
