Third edition.Hervey had a lasting impact on art through William Blake who painted Epitome of James Herveys Meditations among the Tombs between 1820 and 1825. Hervey is also mentioned in Blakes work as one of the holy guards to the four-fold gate and his influence on Blakes poem The Tyger has also been noted.Lit.: Buijnsters Tussen twee werelden. Zijn boeken waren ongelooflijk populair: toen hier in 1754 de 'Godvruchtige overdenkingen' verscheen was in Engeland de 'Meditations among the Tombs' 1746 al aan zijn elfde druk toe. Ook in Nederland maakte Herveys preekstoel-proza plechtstatig en overladen met beeldspraak gedurende enige tijd grote indruk: na deze derde verscheen al in 1762 nog een vierde druk.
