Whitall on pastedown bookplate of University of Pittsburgh's Hervey Allen Collection on flyleaf with their discard stamp. Inscribed on flyleaf "Fr. Van's own hand eye and therefore affectionately from Hervey Allen May 1926 small drawing of eyeglasses The curious spectacles herein for kindly eyes." Mrs. Whitall and Allen were friends in South Carolina and Allen gave to her the bound manuscript of "Anthony Adverse" the subject of a New Yorker article in 1934. Major Whitall was a well known book collector and bibliophile. Struck by Allen's poem "The Blindman" published in 1923 Whitall established "The Blindman Prize" a $250 annual prize for the best poem administered by the Poetry Society of South Carolina. It is clear from all this that Allen was very close to the Whitalls. Allen's account of the American front in France in the summer of 1918. Allen was born in Pittsburgh in 1889 graduated from Pitt in 1915 and served as a 2nd lieutenant in the 18th Pennsylvania Infantry on the Mexican border in 1916 during the Pancho Villa Expedition. That year he published a collection of poems Ballads of the Border. He also served as a lieutenant and later a company commander of Company "B" of the 1st Battalion 111th Infantry Regiment of the 28th keystone Division United States Army during World War I and fought in the Aisne-Marne offensive July-August 1918. After that he taught English at the University of Pittsburgh spent some time teaching in South Carolina where he met Dubose Heyward who became a close friend and collaborator. He published widely both poety and novels including a poetry collection that won the Yale Younger Poets award; his novel "Anthony Adverse" 1933 is probably his best known and most accomplished work considered one of the great examples of the modern historical novel. 1925réf. 16083JNew York: Harper & Brothers 1925. First Edition First Printing. Signed presentation copy from Hervey Allen to fellow poet Edwin Arlington Robinson three time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Inscribed: “To ‘Brother’ Robinson with best regards Hervey Allen”. The word “Brother” in the inscription amusingly refers to the monk like brotherhood Allen and Robinson shared at the McDowell Colony retreat for the arts. Yearly from 1911 to 1934 Edwin Arlington Robinson attended the McDowell Colony where he met and became friends with young poet Hervey Allen who attended and wrote at the Colony in 1921 1922 1923. Some of the poems in this book are the result of those stays. Fine in a very good dust jacket with some tiny chipping and a 2 inch tear to the top of the front spine fold. Hervey Allen went on to write more poetry and historical novels and is best remembered for Anthony Adverse which was made into the 1936 classic film starring Fredric March and Olivia de Havilland.
