1931ref. 80489Adelaide: 'Printed and Published by the Author' 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. Adelaide 'Printed and Published by the Author' 1931. Octavo 171 pages with the press mark on the title page. Flush-cut quarter cloth and plain papered boards with the title indistinctly printed along the spine; stitching loose; however it is probably pretty much an as-issued copy of a very indifferent private press production. Inscribed by the author who later released his hand-set and hand-printed items under the imprint of The Horace Walpole Press. Offered together with four other titles from the Press: 'Occasional Verse' by Rogers 1933; 'More Occasional Verse' by Rogers 1935 and 'Selections from Modern French Poetry' and 'Dips into the Classics' both translated by H.E. Ashley and F.E. Rogers. Although the last two mentioned are undated Farmer 'Private Presses and Australia' 1972 gives 1938 as the publication date of 'Selections from Modern French Poetry'. As this book lists all of the titles recorded by Farmer other than 'Memoirs of a Medico' 1941 it seems reasonable to suggest that the six undated titles in Farmer appeared not later than 1938. Of the four extra titles offered here only 'Occasional Verse' is not inscribed and signed by the author. Frederick Edward Rogers 1865-1947 was an English doctor. He recounts in his memoirs that 'In 1923 my health being indifferent my wife and I and two younger daughters set sail for Adelaide South Australia where we joined our second girl who had married a Digger'. 5 items. 1941ref. 79998Adelaide: 'Printed and Published At "the Horace Walpole Press"' The Author 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide 'Printed and Published At "the Horace Walpole Press"' The Author 1941. Octavo v first two blank 5 last two blank 484 pages. Overlapping limp cloth with a paper title-label on the spine; covers slightly marked bumped and indented with marginal pinpricks to the front cover and the first 60 or so pages; endpapers offset with the rear one marked; overall a very good copy of an indifferent production meaning the pinpricks are probably 'as-issued'!. Inscribed 'To Eric & Jean McLaughlin with the Compliments & Best Wishes of F.E. Rogers Xmas /41'. The book was hand-set and printed by the author who apologizes in the preface for the many errors present. 'These errors are due I think mainly to composing much of the matter without an intervening manuscript stage' - no mean feat! Frederick Edward Rogers 1865-1947 was an English doctor. He recounts in his memoirs that 'In 1923 my health being indifferent my wife and I and two younger daughters set sail for Adelaide South Australia where we joined our second girl who had married a Digger'. We have previously sighted an obituary that mentioned that a second volume of memoirs was published in 1945; Farmer does not record this in 'Private Presses and Australia' 1972 and the supplement in 1976. 1999ref. 27609New York:: Scribner's 1999. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Faith Stewart-Gordon's revealing memoir shows why the legendary Russian Tea Room restaurant lives up to its reputation -- and then some. It's not just about a famous place it is a true memoir at times very funny always touching sometimes sad and often revealing about a brave and quirky young South Carolina woman Faith Stewart-Gordon. From the early 1950s and acting on Broadway to her marriage to the Russian Tea Room owner Sidney Kaye and her subsequent struggles to operate the restaurant after his death she balanced a career and young motherhood a journey with which many will empathize. Faith Stewart-Gordon never lost sight of what went on behind the scenes both in the restaurant and in her own life. The Russian Tea Room is not only a story of survival but of the quest for self-knowledge set against the most glamorous of backgrounds. Scribner's, unknown

1934ref. 10265Los Angeles 1934. 24 film negatives 4 1/8 x 3 1/8" all in fine condition. Also includes 10 positive photos on proof sheets digitally converted from the negatives. John Cudney 1847-1934 better known as Brother Isaiah or the "Miracle Man" was a Canadian-born faith healer evangelist and eventual leader of a strange religious community in Los Angeles. He first achieved notoriety in New Orleans around 1920 where reports of miraculous cures drew enormous crowds to his houseboat on the Mississippi. Thousands reportedly waited to see him extra streetcars were put into service concession stands appeared along the levee and charitable organizations provided food and blankets for the sick who had traveled to seek his touch. Cudney carried his ministry to California establishing "Miracle Hill" in Los Angeles near Lincoln Park where crowds again gathered to watch the long-haired white-robed prophet lay hands upon the sick. His activities attracted controversy as well as followers and in 1921 he was tried for manslaughter following the death of a seriously ill woman who had received his treatment; he was acquitted. Cudney ultimately proclaimed himself the 88th and final incarnation of the prophet Isaiah and established the Colony of the Saints near Oroville California where his followers became known as the "Immortals." He preached his own immortality and promised his disciples that they too would never die if obedient to his teachings. His own death in 1934 put that promise to the test with Time reporting the scene: "On his Oroville hillside last fortnight Death came as it must to all men to Brother Isaiah 90. Authorities did not discover it until last week. Squatted around his corpse praying without cease his 40 "Immortals" waited his resurrection. Authorities looked at the body decided it had better be buried while there was something still left to bury. Next day in overalls and gingham the "Immortals" who support themselves by farming chanted a requiem as Brother Isaiah was lowered into the earth. He lay in a plain pine box his head pointed toward the north his long white whiskers flowing over his long white robe. His followers plowed and harrowed the earth above him went away to await his second coming." The present photographs appear to date principally from Cudney's later California years. Several show Brother Isaiah in his more familiar guise posed in a garden and inside a home in a floor-length white garment with Bible in hand. A particularly interesting group documents his fascination with aviation: Cudney appears transformed into a rather dapper figure in a dark three-piece suit beside a Maddux Air Lines plane and a Ford Trimotor while another shows him in a tan suit beside a likely Continental Airlanes commercial aircraft. Most striking are photographs apparently associated with the Graf Zeppelin's 1929 world tour and its stop at Mines Field in Los Angeles including Cudney among German aviators and wearing a large Graf Zeppelin service badge over his white suit and ten-gallon hat. The aeronautical imagery is oddly appropriate; Cudney had decades earlier prophesied that "Man will find himself wings." An unusual surviving photographic record of one of the stranger figures in early twentieth-century American faith healing. . unknown
