1896ref. 56203London / New York: Ernest Nister / E.P. Durron & Co 1896. Very good. First edition of this toy theater-like pop-up book in which 3D scenes of the land of the Fae are illustrated within pop-up chromolithographic frames. Children's book publisher Nister made a specialty of movable and toy books like this one a famous example in its series of "stand-up" books. These used paper and linen mechanisms to pull pictorial elements upright creating a 3D scene that we now recognize as a pop-up - though they were not yet called that. As bibliographer Eric Quayle notes "Later versions with the same basic ideas . were called 'pop-up' books" 225. A terrific survival the mechanisms still capable of eliciting wonder with the turning of a leaf. 10.5'' x 13.75''. Original color pictorial paper boards with green cloth spine. Floral-patterned endpapers. Illustrated by Hardy with 6 full-page pop-ups plus black-and-white in-text vignettes. 28 pages. 1897 gift inscription effaced from verso of front free endpaper. Notable wear and rubbing to boards binding a bit shaken with rear joint starting still intact. Pop-ups rehinged with some gutter reinforcements. Bright. Ernest Nister / E.P. Durron & Co unknown
