Some foxing though mainly marginal and 2 plates with some staining while towards the end there is a marginal brown stain not touching the plate area but for the last few text pages just touching the letters. The yellow glazed endpapers are brown mottled. Illustrations 1-80 show nature mostly as groups of animals and plants. Illustrations 81-241 depict trades incl. several cooking scenes miners textile weaving wig-makers etc. 243-256 cosmography & geography showing different religions virtues. 269-282 show children playing men playing billiards wrestling circus & theatres lessons in fencing dancing balloon rides fireworks bullfights horse racing a marvellous train with a postillion blowing a horn & open coaches and a chimney like a barber's pole later we see deep sea diving bells being used to salvage cannons. There is an example of slave traders a summer fair and Christmas celebrations finally a few more trades eg. forging steel the file maker carpets being made nightwatchman messenger and post with finally a grave-side scene. Each illustration is accompanied by a 5 language text - English German French & Latin and newly added for the first time in this edition Italian. These describe the animals and the trades etc. This Gailer reworking of the Orbis Pictus is nearly a new book and makes one of the most complete book of trades cf. Seebass 398 Wegehaupt I 697. Circa le raccolte di traduzioni degli affreschi del Circignani (Pomarancio), si tenga presente che le chiese appartenevano ai collegi germanico-ungarico ed inglese: gli atroci martirologi affrescati dal Pomarancio dovevano quindi preparare i futuri soldati di Cristo alle più dure prove nelle terre dell'eresia; alle incisioni del C. non erano quindi delegati solo compiti di riproduzione, ma anche di edificazione e di diffusione di modelli esemplari nell'ambito della cultura figurativa della Controriforma. Le raccolte di stampe hanno poi acquistato grande importanza documentaria dal momento che il ciclo di S. Apollinare è andato distrutto, e che dal ciclo di S. Stefano Rotondo sono scomparse le iscrizioni, i cui testi sono conservati nelle tavole con gli Ecclesiae militantis triumphi. In-folio, 30 chalcographic plates, title page and leaves from 1 to 12 damaged in the lower left margin, without prejudice of the engraving, binding in simple paper. Regarding the collections of translations of the frescoes by Circignani (Pomarancio), it should be noted that the churches belonged to the Germanic-Hungarian and English colleges: the atrocious martyrologists frescoed by Pomarancio had therefore to prepare the future soldiers of Christ for the harshest trials in the lands of heresy; the engravings of C. were therefore not only delegated tasks of reproduction, but also of building and spreading exemplary models in the context of the figurative culture of the Counter-Reformation. The collections of prints then acquired great documentary importance since the cycle of S. Apollinare was destroyed, and that the inscriptions disappeared from the cycle of S. Stefano Rotondo, whose texts are preserved in the tables with the Ecclesiae militantis triumphi.

The friendship between Baldwin and Eberhart is well documented with Eberhart considered the founder of the modern romance suspense or mystery novel. Very good. - A total of three letters the first two of which are penned by the American author Faith Baldwin and are addressed to her friend Rabbi Kurt L. Metzger. The first is a 3-page letter consisting of over 270 words penned by Faith Baldwin on three sides of two sheets of her 7-3/4 inch high by 5-3/4 inch wide light blue personal stationery. In her letter dated April 20 1973 Baldwin writes to the Rabbi & Mrs. Metzger "How lovely of you to remember me! I hope you had a Joyous Passover - and that you're happy in Blue River." She mentions having had cataract surgery back in 1970 and that "I went back to work in April 1971. That NOVEL One More Time was published in 72 & there will be one this coming July - No Bed of Roses - & I just finished one for the Winter of 1974!" That novel "Time and the Hour" was published on January 1 1974. She mentions that her vision is all right but that she tires easily and finds reading hard. She mentions that "The old books are now coming out in uniform paper backs Warner Paperback Library - since Jan 72 - one a month . I meant to tell you a very old book of mine came out in Israel." She closes by wishing them a lovely spring. Signed "Faith". Folded for mailing else fine with the original mailing envelope. The second is a one-and-a-half page letter consisting of over 105 words penned on both sides of her 7-3/4 inch high by 5-3/4 inch wide light blue personal stationery. In her letter dated Dec. 21 1974 Faith Baldwin writes to Rabbi & Mrs. Metzger opening her letter with pleasantries ".see Rabbi's a glutton for work whereas I spent 73 trying to survive. - Why - I finished a book in March." Her novel "New Girl in Town" was published on January 1 1975. She concludes with "I have run out of paper good pens energy mine stamps almost and of course patience." Signed "Faith / Any Variety of". Folded for mailing else near fine with the original mailing envelope. Together with: An Autograph letter signed by the last Rabbi of Nuremberg Rabbi Kurtz L. Metzger to Faith Baldwin's daughter. Over 350 words penned on both sides of his personal 10-7/8 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide stationery. Responding to a brief mailgram he received from Hervey on March 19th informing him of her mother Faith Baldwin's death Rabbi Kurt L. Metzger writes a lengthy consoling letter dated March 21 1978: "Though it is always bitter and painful to loose sic a dear one and especially a mother such as yours I do hope that after the initial experience of her passing away a feeling of gratitude will replace your emotions of sorrow. For the last two years must have been for your mother a horrible period of frustration since she was no longer able to live a life of independence." He describes how she has been relieved of her pain and frustration at "no longer being able to use her God-given gift of being productive in the literary field in which she has secured for herself the immortality of an extremely beloved and highly appreciated author." He hopes that although her mother has passed they will stay in touch "and continue a relationship which I enjoyed with your mother so much over the years." Signed "Kurt". Folded for mailing with a short tear along the left edge and offsetting near the middle. Very good with the original mailgram from Hervey. The American author of romance novels and other fiction Faith Baldwin 1893-1978 often wrote of women juggling careers and family enabling working women of all ages to identify with her characters. As a youth Baldwin lived for two years in Europe living in Dresden with one of her mother's close friends while the First World War was raging. She learned German and went to cooking school before returning to the U.S. in 1916. She began working for the War Camp Community Service where she met her future husband. A friend of Faith Baldwin Rabbi Kurt L. Metzger 1909-1992 was born in Nuremberg and was the Rabbi of Landau from 1935 to 1938. He was arrested while attending the Jewish Theological Seminary and incarcerated at the Buchenwald concentration camp for months but eventually released to serve as the Rabbi of Nuremberg. Metzger immigrated to the United States in 1940 serving as Rabbi of Temple Beth El in Glen Falls New York. The last Rabbi of Nuremberg he returned to visit Germany several times after he was and was named the Honorary Rabbi of his former native town of Nuremberg in 1977.
