They could have imperfections such as creasing fanning inscriptions margin notes yellowing staining on edge or cover or pages bumps scuffs etc etc sometimes multiple of these. It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. 1934réf. 10265Los Angeles 1934. 24 film negatives 4 1/8 x 3 1/8" all in fine condition. Also includes 10 positive photos on proof sheets digitally converted from the negatives. John Cudney 1847-1934 better known as Brother Isaiah or the "Miracle Man" was a Canadian-born faith healer evangelist and eventual leader of a strange religious community in Los Angeles. He first achieved notoriety in New Orleans around 1920 where reports of miraculous cures drew enormous crowds to his houseboat on the Mississippi. Thousands reportedly waited to see him extra streetcars were put into service concession stands appeared along the levee and charitable organizations provided food and blankets for the sick who had traveled to seek his touch. Cudney carried his ministry to California establishing "Miracle Hill" in Los Angeles near Lincoln Park where crowds again gathered to watch the long-haired white-robed prophet lay hands upon the sick. His activities attracted controversy as well as followers and in 1921 he was tried for manslaughter following the death of a seriously ill woman who had received his treatment; he was acquitted. Cudney ultimately proclaimed himself the 88th and final incarnation of the prophet Isaiah and established the Colony of the Saints near Oroville California where his followers became known as the "Immortals." He preached his own immortality and promised his disciples that they too would never die if obedient to his teachings. His own death in 1934 put that promise to the test with Time reporting the scene: "On his Oroville hillside last fortnight Death came as it must to all men to Brother Isaiah 90. Authorities did not discover it until last week. Squatted around his corpse praying without cease his 40 "Immortals" waited his resurrection. Authorities looked at the body decided it had better be buried while there was something still left to bury. Next day in overalls and gingham the "Immortals" who support themselves by farming chanted a requiem as Brother Isaiah was lowered into the earth. He lay in a plain pine box his head pointed toward the north his long white whiskers flowing over his long white robe. His followers plowed and harrowed the earth above him went away to await his second coming." The present photographs appear to date principally from Cudney's later California years. Several show Brother Isaiah in his more familiar guise posed in a garden and inside a home in a floor-length white garment with Bible in hand. A particularly interesting group documents his fascination with aviation: Cudney appears transformed into a rather dapper figure in a dark three-piece suit beside a Maddux Air Lines plane and a Ford Trimotor while another shows him in a tan suit beside a likely Continental Airlanes commercial aircraft. Most striking are photographs apparently associated with the Graf Zeppelin's 1929 world tour and its stop at Mines Field in Los Angeles including Cudney among German aviators and wearing a large Graf Zeppelin service badge over his white suit and ten-gallon hat. The aeronautical imagery is oddly appropriate; Cudney had decades earlier prophesied that "Man will find himself wings." An unusual surviving photographic record of one of the stranger figures in early twentieth-century American faith healing. . unknown
1949réf. 44365N. P.: Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company 1949. 1949. RAILROAD. 18" x 24" color print. An attractive print issued by the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe celebrating the railroad's sleek modern trains but also highlighting the disruptive force of technology on a formerly pristine frontier. It was said of the Transcontinental Railroad completed in 1869 that it destroyed traditional conceptions of time and space by being able to move people and goods so quickly through vast distances. In this image created eighty years after the laying of the Golden Spike time and space are once again disrupted as modern train design confronts an image of three Native Americans who appear more at home in the mid-nineteenth century than the post-World War Two era. The print shows a long Super Chief passenger train cutting through a southwestern landscape with Monument Valley-type buttes rising in the background and three Native Americans in the foreground. The most prominent of the three Indians atop a trotting white horse wears a long flowing headdress and holds a spear aloft pointed toward the train. Though the chief is moving forward the train is drawn in such a way as to clearly outpace him alluding to the triumph of modern technology over the abilities of man and beast. The meaning of the chief's gesture seems a bit unclear to this viewer - it is hard to tell whether he is saluting the train or cursing it. A captivating western image. Neat expert repairs on verso to the four corners. Short repaired tear in upper margin not affecting the image repaired two-inch tear in lower left just into the image. Very good. 1847réf. 0002411MARION ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM AL. Good. 1847. On offer is a super significant ante bellum manuscript letter handwritten by Dr. F.E. Gordon writing to his sister in Charleston South Carolina about his new life in Marion Alabama. Dated May 15 1847 the four 4 page offers up a scathing review. Dr. Gordon who would go on to be a noted member of the medical community in Marion for having published papers on fever and dysentery in a number of medical journals had apparently just moved to Alabama from South Carolina to set up his medical practice. He writes of his wife Sarah and their young son bemoaning the fact that Alabama is a less civilized less hospitable place than South Carolina. Here are some snippets: "Alabama differs much from S. Carolina and in nothing more than in the general demoralization which prevails. Public faith and private have long ago fallen into disrepute; and they are at present canvassing whether they shall repudiate the state debt as Mississippi did a few years ago or not. For my part I shall never cease to deplore the want of honesty and of refinement which are equally prevalent throughout this State. All the ceremonies which are so punctiliously kept up by the better classes in Charleston are unknown here; and those who pretend to lead the fashion and rule the politics of the state would be dubbed "outer barbarians" in your native City. In Mobile you can find some good society although the same moral tone pervades the most of that city." He says he is determined to make the best of it however. He mentions that though there are few amusements no theater or balls save for events at the local schools: Howard College Marion Female Seminary and the Judson Institute. He attends a series of lectures on Natural Philosophy and Chemistry given by Prof. Sherman at Howard College. He says he has also been called to court on cases to give "medical testimony." Folded for mailing some small loss to a few letters from opening but overall G.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MARION ALABAMA DR. F.E.
