Faith Norris grew up in Korea and maintained friendships when she returned to the US. During the Korean War she was encouraged to write a story that would introduce Korea to American children. The illustrator Kurt Wiese has an interesting connection to Asia: he was traveling in China for work and was captured by the Japanese at the outbreak of WWI. He won both the Newbery and the Caldecott for Asian-themed children's books and was a solid pick to illustrate this one. Julian Messner hardcover
