In his early years John Grossman - later the noted mainstream artist and graphic designer - did a number of pulp illustrations. This one signed and dated in 1949 was done in the richly textured Golden Age style of Virgil Finlay with a variety of detailed stipplings and crosshatchings see scans. Apparently an homage to Theodore Sturgeon's timeless novelette Microcosmic God that story was written in 1941 8 years prior to this illustration or possible an illustration for a later reprint of it - assuming the penciled title on the back is correct and it certainly seems that if you've read the story. 1679ref. 1679oxford1679 King James Holy Bible 2nd Oxford Edition PRESENTING FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION- EXQUISITE GENUINE 345 YEAR OLD KING JAMES BIBLE PRINTED BY OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS AT THE SHELDONIAN THEATRE IN OXFORD. Small quarto 8.5 x 6.5 x 2.75 inches. Herbert #745. INCLUDING 1. THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. 2. THE OLD TESTAMENT WITH THE APOCRYPHA. 3. THE NEW TESTAMENT. 4. THE WHOLE BOOK OF PSALMS COLLECTED INTO ENGLISH METER. Pages are in very good condition throughout with some scattered foxing/browinging in places. This is perhaps the earliest edition of the English Bible which has dates added in the margins based upon the famous work Annales Veteris et Novi Testamenti 1650-4 see inset above by James Ussher 1581- 1656 Archbishop of Armagh. Ussher dated the creation as year 1 counting time forward systematically using Biblical chronology and genealogy. He dated Job 2400 the Nativity 4000 and the exile of John to Patmos Island in year 4093. Biblical Historians generally agree that this took place in 90 A.D. It has been about 1900 years since this event and when added to the 4093 years that led up to this event= approx. 6020 years have passed to today showing the true age of the EARTH. In 1680 Oxford University Press printed their first folio edition of the King James Bible which included an index to accompany these marginal dates. Oxford University Press OUP is the publishing house of the University of Oxford. It is the largest university press in the world. Its first book was printed in 1478 while over a century later the Press was officially granted the legal right to print books by decree in 1586. In 1633 King Charles the First granted a charter to the University permitting them to print all manner of books including the English Bible. This charter would not be acted upon for another 42 years until 1675 when they printed the King James Bible for the very first time. University of Oxford Press is governed by a group of 15 academics the Delegates of the Press appointed by the vice- chancellor of the University of Oxford. The Delegates of the Press are led by the Secretary to the Delegates who serves as OUP's chief executive and as its major representative on other university bodies. Oxford University Press has had a similar governance structure since the 17th century. The press is located on Walton Street Oxford opposite Somerville College in the inner suburb of Jericho. For the last 400 years OUP has focused primarily on the publication of pedagogical texts. It continues this tradition today by publishing academic journals dictionaries English language resources bibliographies books on Indology music classics literature and history as well as Bibles and atlases. The work is partly printed in Syriac Arabic Hebrew and Greek. Louis de Dieu 1590-1642 who was well-versed in all these languages was renowned for his interpretations of biblical texts which were based on a wide and profound linguistic learning. His studies were mainly concerned with the early and more recent translations of the Bible. In the present work he compares the Gospel texts in the Oriental languages with that of the Latin translations by humanist Desiderius Erasmus 1466-1536 and Calvinist Theodore Beza 1519-1605.De Dieu was a Dutch Protestant minister and a leading orientalist. He studied theology and Oriental languages at the University of Leiden under Thomas Erpenius and Jacob Golius. The present work is the first part of a series of four separately published works with commentaries on the New Testament. They were reprinted as a single body of work in 1693 under the title Critica sacra sive animadversiones in loca quaedam difficiliora. De Dieu also wrote the first Persian grammar published in Europe. Ad 2: The second work in this volume is a scarce treatise on the genealogy of Christ and the chronology of the "Passio Christi" based on evangelist sources. It has only been recorded in four libraries and we have not been able to find any other copies in sales records of the past century. It is apparently so scarce that the USTC has marked it as a "lost book".With a later annotation on the front pastedown about the contents of the work and an ownership annotation by Swiss theologian Johann Kaspar Hagenbuch 1700-1763 at the head of the title page. In the year 405 A.D. after 23 years working in caves beneath the city of Bethlehem Saint Jerome completed his work translating the Holy Scriptures from Hebrew and Greek into Latin for the first time. His Latin Vulgate became the Bible of the Roman Catholic Church. Over 1200 years later it was finally translated into English and is known as the Douay Rheims Bible. The New Testament was completed at Rheims in 1582 and due to financial constraints the Old Testament would be completed some 27 years later in 1609 at Douay. It would take another 185 years before the first pulpit folio edition would be published. This Dublin Bible of 1794 was the first priting of the complete Vulgate in English to be printed in the large grand pulpit folio format. This was a visible mark of a changing Catholic consciousness in Ireland a new sense of stature headed by Archbishop Richard O'Reilly of Armagh and including seven other bishops parish priests Catholic gentry merchants and even craftsmen such as Patrick Conolly a stucco-plasterer on South Cumberland Street. Though described as the sixth edition this was only the third time the complete Vulgate had been printed in Ireland. The first Irishman to undertake an English translation of the Vulgate was Cornelius Nary 1658-1738 Paris-educated and parish priest of St Michan's in Dublin. His translation of the New Testament was published in 1718. No place of printing is given in the imprint but the press corrector states that the translator was 'at a great distance' when the book was printed and the approbations and printer's signatures make Paris a possibility without ruling out Dublin. Nary's translation was banned by Rome in 1722 for unorthodoxy. The first publishing in Ireland of the complete Vulgate was in 1763-4: the translation of Bishop Richard Challoner 1691-1781 it comprised the second revision of his Old Testament and the fourth revision of his New Testament. No place or printer is mentioned but Pat Lord and Richard Fitzsimons of Dublin took the credit in a less conspicuous source. Apart from a re-issue by Patrick Wogan in 1789 of a Liverpool-printed New Testament there was no further Irish edition until at the behest of John Carpenter Archbishop of Dublin Bernard MacMahon priest of Hardwick Street Chapel who had already published a Missale Romanum with an Irish Proper in 1777 published an extensive revision of Challoner's New Testament in 1783. He went on to revise his New Testament further and to publish it with Challoner's Old Testament just slightly revised in 1791 in quarto for the Archbishop of Dublin John Thomas Troy OP. Three years later in 1794 it was brought out once more in this fine pulpit folio edition. James Reilly hardcover
1690ref. 178341Lisbon: Officina de Miguel Deslandes 1690. Holier than thou: Franciscan-Jesuit rivalries in East Asia First edition rare institutionally and in commerce of one of the few sources on Franciscan missionary efforts in China India and South East Asia during the 16th and 17th centuries. The politically motivated chronicle stresses the leading role of the order rather than the Jesuits in spearheading the expansion of Portuguese religious and political influence in the region. WorldCat records copies in seven locations only none of which are in Asia. "Jacinto de Deus is an important author given the limited number of works printed by the Franciscans in the East" "Brachilogia". Born in Macao in 1612 to a Portuguese father and Chinese mother Cecília da Cunha he was ordained as a Franciscan in 1630 and served for the next five decades in Madre de Deus province Goa. Vergel de plantas was completed in 1679 but only published after his death at Goa in 1681. It narrates the history of the order after its first representatives arrived in Goa in 1540 and describes the controversies surrounding the creation of Madre de Deus in particular the absorption of Franciscan custodies in Macao and Malacca into the new province's administrative and governing purview. A lengthy section representing pages 115 to 271 addresses interactions in China beginning with the abortive mission of Pedro de Alfaro to Canton in 1579 which unsuccessfully tried to challenge the Jesuit monopoly over dealings with China and exploit the governor of Guangdong's perceived openness to dealings with foreigners. The China section also draws on material from the writings of the Jesuit Gabriel de Magalhães 1610-1677 providing a description of the Chinese empire. Two copies with varying title pages are held at the Portuguese National Library and copies can also be found at the British Library Yale Harvard Indiana Minnesota and Leiden. Quarto 275 x 195 mm in sixes pp. xii 479. Ornamental woodcut initials headpieces and chalice motif on title page. Nineteenth-century calf raised bands rolled in gilt label lettered in gilt compartments double-ruled in gilt with gilt central lozenges gilt date at foot boards with scrolling panel in blind marbled endpapers edges sprinkled red. SAMUEL MEARNE- 20 April 1624 – May 1683 An English Restoration Bookbinder and publisher whose work is considered a high point of pre-industrial bookbinding. He and his sons Charles and Samuel Jr. were referred to by historians as the Queene's Binder. Mearne was born in Reading England and lived all of his professional life in Little Britain in Aldersgate. He passed his apprenticeship in 1646 and set up as a bookseller and publisher. In 1655 he and two others went to the Netherlands where he probably performed a service to Charles II in exile because he was named bookbinder to the king on 20 June 1660. He was also a part owner of the king's printing house with John Bill and Christopher Barker. In 1668 Charles petitioned to have Mearne and others admitted to the Stationers' Company. In the Stationers' Company Mearne would serve as warden and later master. In 1674 he became the stationer in ordinary to Charles and the next year he and his son were made grants for life to their position. The earliest surviving books bound by Mearne come from 1655 while many survive from his time as bookbinder to the king. His workshop produced beautiful gold tooled and onlay bindings for Charles and the royal libraries. For the chapels gifts and presentations of the installation of the Knight of the Garter ceremonies Mearne's shop produced even more lavishly bound books. Professionally Mearne was popular with other publishers for his work at hunting down illegal presses. While he did not perform the binding himself personally after his appointment he oversaw the production and designs of his books. Samuel Mearne Sr. died in 1683 with his son Charles dying in 1686 and Samuel Mearne Jr. taking over the shop and appointments until the Glorious Revolution in 1689.
