rif. PF39Oblong Quarto album ca. 204x268 cm 8 x 10 ½ in. 16 paper album leaves. With 84 original gelatin silver photographs including at least one period real photo postcard from ca. 81x138 cm 3 ¼ x 5 ½ in to ca. 64x37 cm 2 ½ x 1 ½ in. About eighty photos with period ink captions in English on the mounts. Period green paper covers fastened with a string with the vignette of the Sphinx on the front cover. Professional restoration of the covers mild silvering of the photographs but otherwise a very good album with strong interesting photos. Private album of original photographs compiled by a British nurse apparently a V.A.D. who served with the 78th General Hospital in Alexandria in 1917–1918. The 78th General Hospital was one of the British military hospitals at Alexandria during the First World War. From 1915 the city was the main base and hospital center for the Gallipoli campaign and later for the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Sinai and Palestine. The hospital was apparently located at Hadra in the eastern part of the city and was run by the Royal Army Medical Corps with nursing staff that included V.A.D. volunteers. Little has been published about it and the photographs in this album are therefore extremely rare visual record of the hospital. The album features 84 well-executed photos with three rare images showing aerial views of the 78th General Hospital in Hadra and H.R.H. Duke of Connaught visiting the 19th General Hospital in Alexandria during his tour of Egypt and Palestine in March 1918. Especially interesting are about fifty lively scenes of the compiler’s companions mostly female from the hospital V. A. D. and Royal Army Medical Corps illustrating their daily lives. The photos show them posing for group portraits in uniforms listening to a band at a Christmas tea party riding donkeys dining at a sports club participating in whistling & pipe lighting competitions posing with patients showing the compiler as well washing clothes & doing laundry on an outing to Mex riding camels on a visit to the Sphinx and “the last crowd to leave 78th General Hospital”. There is also one real photo postcard from Cairo showing nurses dining at the “Empire Nurses Red Cross Club”. About nine important photographs document Basra and its surroundings in Mesopotamia modern-day Iraq apparently taken during the compiler’s travels to the East. When British and Indian troops occupied it in November 1914 Basra was a provincial Ottoman river port of about 60000 people. During the war the British turned it into the main base of the Mesopotamian campaign with new wharves roads camps and hospitals. The rare early images show the city gates from outside a dusty lane the Strand along the waterfront the British cemetery and the village of Ashar and Tanooma on the opposite bank of the Shatt al-Arab. Two photographs illustrate creeks near the city captioned “Robert Creek” and “Kandarey Creek” lined with date palms and crossed by local boats. There’s also one interesting photograph of a Turkish prisoner under guard probably at Basra. Over five vernacular photographs document native life in Egypt including women water carriers a camel ploughing a field local men resting beneath a palm tree a busy market possibly at El Arish in Sinai and children at the Mex tram terminus. The rest of the photos ca. fifteen from the collection mostly show Alexandria an old fort a soldier's cemetery and Pompey's Pillar Cairo Sultan Hassan Mosque and the interior courtyard of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali El Arish general view and Bombay a local woman laborer at the Victoria War Hospital; general view of the city. Overall an interesting collection of rare photographs documenting the daily life of British nurses and medical staff at a military hospital in Alexandria during the last two years of the First World War. hardcover
