1761réf. 8806Boston: Edes and Gill 1761. Disbound. Good binding. Octavo. 35 1 pp. First edition. Removed from volume. Insect spotting to the half title and blank verso of the last leaf; early moisture staining to the contents. Contemporary owner name of Benjamin Parrott dated 1761 on the verso of the title page. Perhaps the same born in Lynn Essex County MA around 1740. Haven was a long-serving minister at the First Church in Dedham MA. Known as a capable orator he was frequently offered invitations to sermons and addresses as in this instance a sermon before the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in Boston to date the oldest chartered military organization in North America. Haven preaches on temperance of spirit and self-control in the face of anger an interesting and salient subject for a military organization particularly in light of the ongoing French and Indian War. Haven uses as an exemplar the late George II and his "surprising firmness of mind in his close attention to and vigorous support of the present war; and that at a time when his flow of spirit might be supposed greatly abated by the infirmities of age; yet so susceptible was his heart of the softer passions that he always prefered sic peace to war when it could be obtained up terms honorable to his crown" p. 23. Rare in commerce. Evans 8878; Sabin 30884; ESTC W29372. Edes and Gill unknown
1769réf. 41974Boston: New-England: Richard Draper 1769. 55 1 blank pp with the half title as issued. Stitched scattered light spotting. Very Good. This election sermon is an important illustration of the growing colonial resentment of Parliamentary abuses of power. Haven pastor of the First Church in Dedham subscribes to the 'natural rights' and 'social compact' theory of government. "By forming into civil society men do indeed give up some of their natural rights; but it is in prospect of a rich compensation in the better security of the rest and in the enjoyment of several additional ones that flow from the constitution of government." Despite the different types of government "the natural rights of the people.are the same under every form of government." He quotes "the great Mr. Locke" on the duty of the people to oppose tyranny and asserts that the colonists are justifiably apprehensive about Parliament's excessive assertions of authority most recently expressed in the Townshend Acts. 1814réf. WRCAM55491N.p. but likely either Philadelphia or Baltimore 1814. Letterpress broadside approximately 17 3/4 x 11 inches. Dark stain in lower margin minor spotting. Very good. Untrimmed. One of only three located copies of this land lottery broadside pertaining to York-Haven Pennsylvania located on the Susquehanna River about fifty miles from Baltimore. The bulk of the broadside is taken up with a listing of property including the "Situation and Description" of the land its size and its dollar value potentially available to purchasers of lottery certificates. Almost all of the lots 593 out of the 600 available are designated for small residential plots measuring from just 30-by- 80 feet to one large plot measuring 30-by-320 feet. The first six lots pertain to a handful of businesses already built near the canal including a merchant mill tavern sawmill and lumber yard. The certificates could be purchased from one of the company's agents in York-Haven York or Baltimore; the company also lists Philadelphia but provides no agent in that city. The broadside is signed in type at the bottom by William Cole the President of the York-Haven Company. This is followed by a short description of the town: "a Post-town in York County Pennsylvania on the West Bank of the river Susquehanna at the Conewago Falls" and a list of distances from York-Haven to other prominent cities namely Baltimore York Borough Columbia Harrisburg and Carlisle. The York-Haven Company was incorporated by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly on March 26 1814. Its investors including William Cole were primarily Baltimore merchants. The company laid out the town of York Haven in two sections in 1814 - "upper town" was perched on the hill and "lower town" was situated by the canal on the Susquehanna River. Because of the canal York Haven became an important trading center until the advent of the railroads. As of the 2010 census just 709 people lived in York Haven. OCLC records just two copies at Yale and the American Antiquarian Society. However the Yale copy is noted as imperfect in their online catalogue. We could locate no copies in auction records. An interesting and informative broadside pertaining to early 19th-century Pennsylvania real estate and business development from the time before "scheme" was a pejorative. OCLC 233650527. unknown books

Fine frontispiece medallion of the author; xii 498 2 pages; fine collotype illustrations of medals throughout the text; errata slip tipped in. Fine. A very scarce and important study one of the true numismatic classics in the area of medals. To this end all public and the principal private collections have been searched and casts obtained of the rarer pieces to complement the medals in my own collection." 1846réf. 1809120058N.P 1846. First Edition. Map. Good. Mexican-American War Era Map Broadside proclaiming Manifest Destiny published at the outset of the Mexican American War. Woodcut map with hand-colored outline. 46 x 56.5 cm. 18 x 22-1/4 inches. Closed tear on left side along fold. Bottom left corner slightly chipped affecting seal of Ohio. Margins trimmed close to state seals. From the map: "The Texians claim as their Boundary the Rio del Norte from its mouth to its source Mexico recognizes their claims only as far as the Nueces." The coloring draws the border to the Rio Grande. Other interesting points: Comanches and Kioways territory; Nauvoo Illinois Mormon refuge; and a Northern "Boundary as Claimed by the United States" and a "Boundary as offered by compromise by the United States" showing claim to Oregon territory. John Haven attribution according to David Rumsey: "Wheat says Haven 1846. This copy was published late in 1846. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico Streeter 3872. Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 Wheat 26 and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 Wheat 47 which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively of this map and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California" so this may be another place it was used or what it was originally made for. Includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C." - David Rumsey Historical Map Collection 2575. Wheat Maps of the California Gold Region 38 slightly different issue: "A flamboyant affair. Haven 'Suter's Colony' is given prominence in 'New California' but no hint of the gold discoveries on either the map or the broadside that surrounds it." Refs: Wheat 513; cf Wheat Gold 26; High Ridge 15; Streeter 3871. "A crude and most interesting piece with curious boundaries: 'New California' extends east to the 109th degree and Oregon north to Alaska!" - Eberstadt 136:122 N.P unknown

1920réf. 179967Boston: Marshall Jones 1920. From the facts to the fantastic First edition Lovecraft's copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "H. P. Lovecraft Gent. His book. 1924". Lovecraft was well-studied in the history and lore of New England and used this knowledge to imbue his writings with an antiquarian flavour. He took care with the details of geography and setting in his tales using reference works such as this to ensure accuracy. In this copy Lovecraft has loosely inserted four newspaper clippings from the Boston Post and the Boston Globe relating to historical buildings in the city. An active preservationist he wrote frequently to local newspapers expressing outrage over threats to historic buildings. He advocated for a city-funded rehabilitation programme for historic structures as well as zoning laws that would protect neighbourhoods and keep new construction compatible with the city's fabric. His personal correspondence "frequently laments the destruction of historic architecture; for example in 1927 he was 'mortified' to discover that the 17th-century neighbourhood of Boston's North End had been largely demolished" Evans p. 111. Lovecraft's first novelette The Shunned House written in October 1924 was inspired by two 18th-century houses one in Providence and another in Elizabeth New Jersey. Boston itself features frequently in his tales notably in Pickman's Model a short story written in September 1926 and published in Weird Tales in October 1927. Octavo. Frontispiece 23 plates 7 folding maps. Original black quarter cloth spine lettered in gilt brown board sides with paper title label on front fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Edges somewhat worn neat repairs to head of front joint and inner hinges browning to endpapers and p. 131 from Lovecraft's clippings. A well-read copy in good condition. Lovecraft's Library 968. Full chestnut morocco boards and spine ornately stamped in gilt and blind including "Grevedon" in blind and "F.H." in gilt on upper board; oblong 8vo 305x235mm; contains 21 original pencil drawings each about 90x140mm mounted to the recto only one per leaf. Undated but likely drawn in the late-18th or early-19th century tho they could be as late as mid-19th; a pencilled notation on the FFEP indicates that the artist is Pierre-Louis Henri Grevedon and the drawings collected by Franklin De Haven. Just a little light wear to binding; internally very clean with the small leather ex-libris of American collector Robert Hoe. Grevedon 1776-1860 was known for his beautiful portraits of young women and these bust-length portraits are no exception; showing all sorts of women some plainly dressed perhaps a maid and others in more extravagant costume coiffure headdress including a bride.
