1928Best.-Nr. 177397Shanghai: Presbyterian Mission Press 1928. First edition in Chinese first printing untraced institutionally. The translator Ada Haven Mateer was an accomplished linguist missionary and theologian. Here she adapts L. M. Cross's well-known prayer devotional to a vocabulary of no more than 1000 characters aiming to aid in Republican-era campaigns to eradicate illiteracy. Mateer 1850-1936 was one of the foreigners trapped in the Legation Quarter during the Boxer Rebellion. Her Siege Days 1903 remains a much-quoted account of the events of summer 1900. Provenance: Shanghai Korean Christians Association with its contemporary stamp on the title page and shelf label on the spine. Octavo. Text in Chinese except for title page publisher's preface and translator's foreword in English. Original black linen over card front cover lettered and decorated in gilt edges red. Covers lightly foxed and worn even toning to text: very good. unknown
