Josef Albers nasce a Bottrop in Germania il 19 marzo 1888 studia litografia a Essen frequenta l'Accademia a Monaco quindi entra al Bauhaus di Weimar nel 1920 dove nel 1922 diventa responsabile del laboratorio del vetro e quando nel 1925 la scuola si trasferisce a Dessau diventa Bauhausmeister. Oltre a lavorare il vetro e il metallo Albers progetta mobili e si occupa di tipografia. Dopo la forzata chiusura del Bauhaus nel 1933 emigra negli Stati Uniti e nel 1936 tiene la sua prima personale a New York al J. B. Neumann's New Art Circle. Nel 1939 diventa cittadino americano. Il Museum of Modern Art di New York organizza un'importante mostra itinerante dell'Artista nel 1965-67 che viene presentata in Sud America in Messico e negli Stati Uniti. Il Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York gli dedica nel 1971 una imponente mostra retrospettiva. Importante monografia che abbraccia la totalità della carriera di Albers fino al 1968.
