Comme le précise l'auteur en introduction, "les Fils de l'Ombre (Aït Ou Malou) habitent les vallées du versant occidental de l'Atlas dans l'arc Sefrou-Mogador. 19598vo., First Edition thus; original pale blue cloth, backstrip lettered in black, covers lightly age-soiled else a very good, clean copy. Published a year after the first edition. Evocative travel diary. Fielding (1918-1991) was one of the first SOE agents (with Paddy Leigh Fermor and Dick Barnes) to be landed in Crete where he spent two years or so in a precarious game of hide and seek with the occupying Germans. Arrested in France later in the war, he was saved from execution by the Polish SOE agent Krystyna Skarbek. In post-war years a close friend of Lawrence Durrell, Fielding developed a career as writer and translator, achieving acclaim for his translation of 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. In common with all TBC editions, this issue omits the plates and map present in the original.
1943Sm. 4to., Sole Edition, 4pp leaflet, folded once, printed in black; some very faint age-staining else a near fine copy. The rarest of all the major Services of Thanksgiving throughout the British Army in WWII, this humble document is considerably harder to find than its Second or Eighth Army counterparts. Anderson's First Army was formed in November 1942 as the spearhead of the land forces of TORCH, the Allied landings is Algeria and Morocco. Taking its final shape as Eastern Task Force in January 1943, it eventually comprised American II Corps, British V and IX Corps, and French XIX Corps. Following the landings First Army attempted to secure the Tunisian shoreline, but time was against it and the campaign became principally one of long-distance logistics. After the success of Eighth Army at Alamein, First Army carried eastwards the main thrust of 18 Army Group's offensive that resulted in the final defeat of the Axis in North Africa in mid-1943 (a victory often compared strategically with Stalingrad). Its job done, First Army was disbanded later in the year and its units reallocated. Rare in any condition.
