Very good albums with lively interesting photos. An attractive collection of well-preserved original gelatin silver photographs showing the aftermath of the Bombardment of Casablanca 1907 during the following French occupation. The bombardment was part of the French conquest of Morocco 1907-1934 and allowed France to establish a western front in addition to the eastern front created earlier in Oujda. The collection was likely compiled by a French officer. The collection contains photographs with general views of Casablanca all post-bombardment including the gate of Marrakesh; Mosquée Ould el-Hamra; the Koubba of Marabout Sidi Beylout; the city’s port; a branch of the State Bank of Morocco; the mellah Jewish quarter; and the neighbourhood of Tnaker. Other photographs include a French field hospital set up in Casablanca; the French camp; and the SS Nive a French transport ship that wrecked near the coast of Casablanca in 1907. There are also snapshots of Moroccan cavaliers prisoners labourers potters merchants and fishers; a nafar a horn player who wakes people up for the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan the Islamic holy month; and scenes from the mellah with Jewish cobblers and children. One photo is of the uncle of Morocco’s sultan either Abdelaziz 1881-1943 or his successor and brother Abd al-Hafid 1875-1937 visiting the French field hospital. Overall a lively collection of photographs from the French occupation of Casablanca after the Bombardment of 1907. hardcover

Mounts slightly waved and age-toned; a few photos mildly faded but overall a very good album of interesting photos. A collection of well-preserved original gelatin silver photographs showing French military activity during the first years of the Conquest of Morocco which began in March 1907 and ended in March 1912 with the establishment of Morocco as a French protectorate though pacification campaigns lasted until 1934. The album was likely compiled by a French officer; several of his fellow officers are identified in the captions Fort Pichon Vergé etc. The album opens with photographs showing preparations for the bombardment of Casablanca 5-7 August 1907 as well as the aftermath. Several images show large groups of soldiers congregating on the shore and the French cruisers Condé 1902 Gloire 1900 and Jeanne d’Arc 1899 off the coast. Others show the structures of the city destroyed by the bombardment. Over 40 photographs show military camps in or around Casablanca including Sidi Bel Yout Sidi Belyout Sidi Moumen and “Sidi Brahim el Qadmiri.” They include several photographs showing a raid of the camp soldiers setting up tents the “7th company” at the beach soldiers fortifying a crest and the tent of “General Drude” likely Antoine Drude 1853-1943. At least one other photograph shows Drude. There are also two photographs of “conscripts” chained together. Five photographs are group portraits of French soldiers and officers some are Moroccan goumiers. They are captioned with a description of events taken between 30 May and 10 July 1908 at “Dar el Baroud” with “guards placed at city gates” and one “Captain Bussy” bringing “15 goumiers.” On the next page three photographs show a “Nzaha” at “Dar el Baroud.” They show French officers sitting at low tables with Moroccan men dressed in white. The caption identifies several of these men: “Abdelkader Bangach” “Si Seddiq Bangach” “Abd el Khaleg” etc. Several photographs show Abd al-Aziz sultan of Morocco 1894-1908 arriving to and leaving Rabat as part of his efforts to garner European support against his brother Abd al-Hafid. Overall it is a historically interesting collection of photographs showing French military activity in the early years of the Conquest of Morocco. hardcover
réf. #[33254]London Gambart Junin & Cie Paris François Delarue 1845. Tinted lithographed view after A. Mayer by A. Mayer et Sabatier. Ca. 38 x 51 cm. A fascinating depiction of the loss of a French man-of-war steamer Le Papin and half her crew on 6 December 1845 off Mazagan now El Jadida in Morocco. Le Papin was one of the vessels destined to form the French squadron on the coast of Africa for the suppression of the slave trade and was on her way to Senegal intending to call at Mogador. 'I have this moment heard from the office of the British consul of the total wreck on the coast between Azmoor and Mazagan of another French man of war steamer of 650 tons burden and 140 horse power. The details are very shocking and the number of lives lost are 77 including the captain and all the officers. with the exception of one midshipman. The newly appointed French consul to Mogador is numbered among the victims. Exactly one half of those on board the unfortunate vessel were drowned the other half were saved under circumstances which reflect the highest credit on the British and French consul at Mazagan. Mr. Redman for it was to his prompt arrival at the spot and his energetic persuasion of the Moors to assist him that the survivors owe their lives' Shipping Gazette. unknown
