Nebout d'abord en poste au Sénégal (1882-1890), participe ensuite aux missions Crampel, dont il sera le seul survivant, et Dybowski (1890-1892 ) puis à la mission Mizon (Cameroun et Nigeria). Il sera ensuite en poste en Côte d'Ivoire, où il commande le poste de Tiassalé en 1894, fonde le poste de Kouadio Kofi Krou. Il exécute en 1897 une mission auprès de Samory. En 1906, il fera l'intérim de Clauzel à Bingerville, puis en 1908, rejoint avec une fonction d'inspecteur le Sénégal. Il terminera sa vie administrative à Bamako. Sa carrière aura été brisée par son choix d'épouser une jeune baoulé dont il aura 6 enfants.
