1919réf. 147489Tbilisi: no stated publisher February 1919. First edition of this rare book of satirical sketches showing British forces and the locals during the occupation of Batumi an oft-overlooked conflict in the final year of the war. There are cartoons of Gurkhas Chinese Punjabis Turks and Cossacks reflecting the wide diversity of people involved in the conflict. We have traced only two other copies at the Imperial War Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Batumi the capital of the region of Adjara in southwest Georgia changed hands multiple times in the immediate aftermath of the First World War. First it was controlled by the Russian Empire until the October Revolution where the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk transferred the region to the Ottomans. However the Transcaucasian Federation opposed this deal and Ottoman forces proceeded to invade in April 1918. After the defeat of the Ottoman empire in the First World War 3000 men from one British and two Indian battalions part of the Army of the Black Sea were sent to supervise their withdrawal in December 1918. The 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders were present in this conflict as part of the 27th Division and the large number of Scottish soldiers pictured in these cartoons indicate that perhaps Baxley was one of them. The region was eventually ceded to the newly independent state of Georgia in 1920. The loosely inserted photographs show a cafe in Batumi the Bosporus a farewell party among soldiers of the Royal Flying Corps the British Army HQ in a bombed-out street and the locals. Octavo. Cartoon illustrations printed on recto of 14 leaves. With 10 loosely inserted gelatin silver prints approximately 85 x 118 mm 3 captioned in pencil on verso 3 numbered in pencil on verso. Original brown paper wrappers wire-stitched as issued front wrapper lettered and decorated in black. Wrappers chipped and loose at lower staple spine separated but holding contents browned; photographs a little bowed and silvered: a very good copy. Rowell & Wye 217. unknown

McElmell who claims a share in the prize 3 pp.; and William Richardson from Liverpool who was aboard the prize "Georgia" when it was taken 10 pp. with folio manuscript document folded to 4pp each page 8-1/2" x 13-1/4" comprising testimony of a Liverpool Broker for the sale of ships. The Confederate States purchased it in 1863 at Dumbarton Scotland. The ship was outfitted with guns and commissioned as the CSS Georgia under the command of William Lewis Maury. She captured nine prizes but was sold in June 1864 to a Liverpool merchant in spite of protests from the United States Minister to Great Britain. The ship returned to sea in August 1864 and was captured by the US Navy frigate Niagara off Portugal. She was then sent to Boston and sold as a lawful prize. unknown

1794réf. 53655Augusta Ga. ca. 1794. Granting Land in Post-Revolutionary Georgia Signed by the Governor An impressive printed land grant completed in manuscript for 1000 acres of land in Washington County Georgia granted by Gov. George Mathews to Richmond Dawson. The document is signed by Mathews as well as the surveyor George Weatherby who has included a sketch of the land in question. The land is described as "on the waters of Choopee River bounded South West and South East by said Dawson's Land and on all other sides by Vacant Lands." Governor Mathews had an eventful career first as a Revolutionary soldier including a stint as colonel of the Virginia troops in Greene's Carolina campaign then as governor of Georgia and finally as a special agent leading "irregular" activities in attempts to wrest Florida from Spain in 1810-12. In the end the U.S. government repudiated Mathews' Florida actions and he died in Augusta a bitter old man. "By his demise the authorities at Washington escaped the consequences of his threat that he'd 'be dam'd if he didn't blow them all up' and he carried to the grave much evidence that might explain his debatable conduct" - DAB. A handsome Georgia document and unusual early imprint. Large wood and wax seal of Georgia attached with ribbon. Folded. Light tanning and foxing. Very good. unknown

Urquhart "S.E.D." signed also by John Milton Georgia's Secretary of State; to this is attached a plat description one-page folio dated September 12 1793 signed by Thomas McCall Surveyor General of Georgia and John Milton as Secretary of State. Augusta GA 1794. A wonderful survival evoking the era of the Yazoo Land Frauds. Both Governor George Mathews and his immediate predecessor Edward Telfair were or were about to be tainted with involvement in Georgia land speculation; Mathews as governor in fact signed the notorious Yazoo Land Act. Having served in the Revolution Mathews had been nominated as the first governor of the Mississippi Territory but lost the appointment because of dubious land speculation and alleged involvement on the Blount Conspiracy; later he played a leading role in fomenting revolution in Florida. Telfair a prominent rebel during the revolution and a member of the Continental Congress served as governor 1789-1793 during which time "he was reckless in his dealings with the state's lands" DAB. Some wear and fraying at the edges a few small splits at folds still a very good example all soundly secured by the original pink ribbon from which the great seal of Georgia is suspended. 1794réf. List3726N.p. 1794. Folded outer letter sheet addressed in manuscript to "His Excellency G. Mathews Esq." and endorsed "By Express." Reverse docketed in a contemporary official hand: "Letter Capt Armstrong / 20 May 1794 / Answered 25th Inst. see Letter Book / Indian War." Seal tear and expected wear from transmission and filing. Contents no longer present. A rare surviving wrapper from the administration of Georgia Governor George Mathews preserving physical evidence of an express-carried military communication during the Creek frontier conflict of the 1790s. The cover bears contemporary executive office docketing identifying the enclosure as an "Indian War" letter from a Captain Armstrong and recording that it was answered on May 25 1794 with a cross-reference to the governor's letter book. Recent research strongly suggests that the sender was the same Captain Armstrong referenced by Governor Mathews in official correspondence of May 8 1794 in which Mathews explained to federal authorities that "the troop commanded by Captain Armstrong were to be considered as the hundred horse." This statement places Armstrong in command of one of the principal mounted frontier forces maintained by Georgia during the Creek conflict and ties him directly to Mathews's military administration only twelve days before the present communication was dispatched.1 Overall a significant early document of correspondence transmitted "By Express" which indicates urgent delivery outside the ordinary mail. Upon receipt it was docketed as an "Indian War" matter answered within five days and entered into the governor's correspondence system. A scarce piece of documentary evidence of communication between Governor Mathews and the commander of a frontier cavalry force operating during one of the most turbulent periods in Georgia's relations with the Creek Nation. 1 "Statement of Facts Relative to the Georgia Militia" Papers of the War Department 1784-1800 George Mason University accessed June 4 2026 https://wardepartmentpapers.org/s/home/item/66430.
