L'ouvrage connaîtra de nombreuses traductions sous divers titres : "Mémoires écrits dans un souterrain", "Notes d'un Souterrain", "Critiques dans un Souterrain", "Les Carnets du Sous-Sol", etc... L’A., il barone Gaspard Gourgaud, generale francese (1783-1852), ufficiale d’ordinanza di Napoleone I (1811), dopo l’abdicazione di Fontainebleau passò nelle guardie del corpo di Luigi XVIII. Combattè poi a Waterloo e seguì l’imperatore a Sant’Elena, dove, sotto dettatura, scrisse due volumi (su otto) delle ‘Memorie per servire alla storia di Francia sotto Napoleone (1822-1823)”.
