1965Best.-Nr. 008278London: Her Majestys Stationery Office & The Earl Marshal of England 1965. This is a small archive of five documents from the 30 January 1965 state funeral of Sir Winston S. Churchill. It is unusual to find a coherent set of such items identifiably belonging to a specific individual in this case Charles Paul Greenway 3rd Baron Greenway 1917-1975. The current 4th Lord Greenway is one of ninety elected hereditary peers remaining in the House of Lords after passage of the House of Lords Act 1999. The documents included are: an embossed printed stamped an original ticket to the funeral issued by the Earl Marshal of England; printed GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS from the Earl Marshal for invited guests; a franked and stamped ON HER MAJESTYS SERVICE stationery envelope; two booklets available at the funeral - The Order of Service and The Ceremonial To Be Observed for the Funeral of The Right Honourable Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill K.G. O.M. C.H. 30th January 1965. The issuer of these documents the Earl Marshal of England is the hereditary office of the Duke of Norfolk whose duties include organizing major ceremonial state occasions such as coronations and state funerals. The ticket is embossed with the sigil of the EARL MARSHAL OF ENGLAND. In calligraphy it specifies Block A and Row 17 and admittance for The Lord Greenway. The GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS document specifies the items provided Letter of Invitation Acceptance/Refusal Form Seating Ticket and Car Label and provides information on dress transport entry time and entry location for the Cathedral. The first two items specified as included with the GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS the Letter of Invitation and Acceptance/Refusal Form are crossed out with a single line in black ink. The ON HER MAJESTYS SERVICE" envelope which conveyed the formal invitation documents features the typed London address of The Lord Greenway. To the right is the ink-stamped frank from THE HOUSE OF LORDS S.W.1 OFFICIAL PAID. At the lower left is an elaborate crowned ink stamp of the HOUSE OF LORDS. The envelope was roughly opened upon receipt but is nonetheless complete. The invitation is fine apart from Greenway inked in blue-green on the verso. The General Instructions are creased once vertically and thrice horizontally ostensibly from original posting. The final two documents were available at the funeral itself a pair of booklets that detail the elaborate funeral proceedings for Winston Churchill. These are The Ceremonial to be Observed at the Funeral of The Right Honourable Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill and The Order of Service for the Funeral of The Right Honourable Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill. Both of these documents are in very good condition apart from the same inked notation on each upper left front cover verso. The blue-green ink and hand ostensibly that of the Baron reads Present Greenway 3rd Baron & Baroness of Stanbridge Earls in the County of Southampton. On Sunday 24 January 1965 Winston Churchill died at the age of 90. He had already become a living national memorial" of the time he had lived and the Nation Empire and free world he had served. His death completed his transformation into a national icon. The next day on 25 January the Queen sent a message to Parliament announcing: "Confident in the support of Parliament for the due acknowledgement of our debt of gratitude and in thanksgiving for the life and example of a national hero" and concluded "I have directed that Sir Winston's body shall lie in State in Westminster Hall and that thereafter the funeral service shall be held in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. Churchill's full state funeral at the Cathedral of St. Paul in London was attended by the Queen other members of the royal family Prime Minister Harold Wilson and representatives of 112 countries. Churchill was interred in St. Martins churchyard Bladon Oxfordshire. It was the first time in a century that a British monarch attended a commoners funeral. With the woodcut English royal arms on the title-page. 8 pp. Extremely rare pamphlet with the text - in French - of the Anglo-Dutch defensive alliance of 3 March 1678. In May 1672 French forces had invaded the Dutch Republic and initially seemed to have achieved an overwhelming victory the so-called Rampjaar 1672. England supported France in what became the Second Anglo-Dutch maritime war 1672-1674. By late July 1672 however the Dutch position had stabilized thanks to the new Stadholder Willem III. Concern about French gains led to the August 1673 Treaty of the Hague between the Republic Brandenburg-Prussia the Emperor Leopold and King Charles II of Spain; in early 1674 England and the Dutch made peace in the Treaty of Westminster. In November 1677 Willem III married his cousin Mary niece of King Charles II of England. In the meantime peace talks had begun in 1676 in Nijmegen resulting in an Anglo-Dutch defensive alliance concluded on the 3rd of March 1678 almost a half year before the treaty was signed in August. But English troops arrived in significant numbers only in late May allowing King Louis XIV to improve his negotiating position by capturing Ghent on the same day the alliance was concluded on 3 March.Untrimmed and with bolts unopened. Light toning slight horizontal creases and faint dampstaining to interior light soiling in a few places. $1750. Later Elizabethan edition of the statutes passed during the final tumultuous parliament of Henry VIII's reign which sat from November 1545 to January 1546. This post-incunabula compilation contains twenty-four individual acts that fundamentally reshaped the legal economic and religious landscape of early modern England. Chief among these is the landmark Act Against Usury 37 Hen. VIII c. 9 a pivotal moment in Western financial history. By repealing the medieval Catholic Church's absolute canonical ban on lending money for profit this statute legalized commercial credit and established England's first maximum legal interest rate capped at 10 percent. This pragmatic shift recognized the realities of a burgeoning mercantile economy and laid the regulatory groundwork for modern capitalist banking. The volume also captures the final aggressive phase of the English Reformation through the First Chantries Act 37 Hen. VIII c. 4. This statute granted the Crown the authority to dissolve and seize the remaining wealth lands and mismanaged assets of chantries-chapels heavily endowed to pray for souls in purgatory. Coming on the heels of the Dissolution of the Monasteries this act funneled critical wealth into Henry's depleted treasury to fund his costly continental wars. Additionally reflecting the highly volatile and paranoid political climate of the ailing King's final years the inclusion of an act penalizing the false accusation of treason highlights the Crown. unknown

I know no resolutions more worthy a Christian king than to prefer his conscience before his kingdoms. – King Charles I England Eikon Basilike A first edition printing of the works of Charles I King of England. Adopted in July 1670 and ratified on 28 September it officially ended the so-called Anglo-Spanish War 1654-1660 in the Caribbean. The open warfare between England and Spain caused by commercial rivalry had already ended in 1660 after six years of attacking each others commercial and colonial interests but the tension in the Caribbean caused conflict for ten more years. The war officially ended with two peace treaties signed at Madrid: the first dated 1667 and the present second dated 1670. The name Godolphin Treaty derives from William Godolphin 1635-1696 an English diplomat for Charles II and a member of Parliament. The negociations for this treaty between him and the Spanish representative Gaspar de Bracamonte Guzmán ca. 1595 - 1676 a Spanish statesman and count of Peñaranda who also played an important role in the famous Peace of Münster 1648 between France and the Holy Roman Empire started in the autumn of 1669. Description: "At the time of its inauguration the Manikata Church in Malta symbolized the new spirit of the Church as defined by the Vatican Council in 1963. This study highlights the way in which these new directives in architecture were introduced. The new spirit of the Church was revealed in the way greater emphasis was placed on the building to be the 'house of the community' reflecting the local character and culture rather than the 'house of God'. Signs of worship - altar lectern and presidential chair - were highlighted while all other devotional objects were rendered inconspicuous; earlier churches tended to be cluttered with altars placed in several chapels.
