With Notes and IllustrationsAn important and visually striking Victorian edition of the Book of Common Prayer published by John Murray in 1850 and lavishly decorated by the celebrated architect and designer Owen Jones. The 1850 issue reproduces the celebrated design first published by Murray in 1845 and is one of the notable achievements of early Victorian colour printing. The text is richly ornamented throughout with coloured borders initials and vignettes together with eight chromolithographic general and divisional title-pages. The illustrations include designs and adaptations after Old Masters and contemporary artists with material drawn by George Scharf and engraved by Samuel Williams. Printed by Vizetelly Brothers & Co.Of particular interest is the strong Brunel-family provenance. The volume bears the engraved bookplate of Isambard Brunel 18371902 eldest son of the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel together with an apparent ownership signature I. Brunel to the front endpaper. A further contemporary inscription records:Isambard Brunel / Left him by / Sarah Fox Wilder / October 31st / 1871.Sarah Fox Wilder née Hawes 18301871 was the daughter of Sophia Macnamara Hawes née Brunel sister of Isambard Kingdom Brunel making Sarah I.K. Brunel's niece and a first cousin of Isambard Brunel 18371902.Also mounted at the front is an autograph letter signed E. Woodfall dated 25 January 1862 and addressed to Mrs Wilder. An early manuscript note identifies the writer as the daughter of the printer of the Letters of Junius. This attribution is consistent with Elizabeth Woodfall 17681862 daughter of Henry Sampson Woodfall the celebrated printer associated with Junius who lived for many years at Dean's Yard Westminster. The letter refers to her willingness to write her name in Mrs Wilder's Prayer Book. No Elizabeth Woodfall inscription has been located in the present volume and the letter is therefore offered as associated Wilder-family provenance rather than as proof that it refers specifically to this copy. The volume retains its highly decorative original-style full calf binding with deeply embossed ecclesiastical ornament and central cross motifs. The binder's ticket reads BOUND BY EDMONDS & REMNANTS. This London firm also known as Remnant & Edmonds was particularly associated with elaborate mechanically embossed Victorian bindings.CONDITION COLLATION & COPY NOTESCOLLATIONxl 484 pp. with eight chromolithographic general and divisional title-pages coloured borders initials vignettes and numerous illustrations throughout.A visually impressive and historically interesting association copy in its elaborate embossed calf binding by Edmonds & Remnants.Binding rubbed and scuffed overall with significant surface wear and areas of leather loss at the extremities corners and joints consistent with age and use. Edward Watson worked at 239 Marylebone Road in the late nineteenth century. His work was exhibited at the first Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1888 where he showed "five specimens of book-binding in hand-coloured calf: antique style and finish". There is no date on this lovely Prayer Book and Hymnal binding but it has the air of the Arts and Crafts Movement with its decorative flair and repurposed Georgian silver clasps. First published in 1560 following requests associated with Eton Winchester Oxford and Cambridge it carried the English Reformation settlement into the language of European humanist learning. The present 1604 John Norton issue STC 16429 is a title-page reissue of the London 1594 edition retaining the corresponding earlier printing and colophon. The volume includes from fol. 188 the separately titled Liber Psalmorum Davidis Prophetae et Regis translated from the Hebrew by Sebastian Münster and dated 1594.The principal title is enclosed within an elaborate architectural woodcut border incorporating personifications of the Seven Liberal Arts: Grammar Rhetoric Dialectic Arithmetic Music Astronomy and Geometry. Decorative woodcut initials appear throughout and the Münster Psalter title bears a substantial woodcut device.Historical Context: The Suppression of the Book of Common PrayerPublished under James I in 1604 this Latin Book of Common Prayer belongs to the Jacobean religious settlement when the established Church of England maintained authorised forms of worship in both English and Latin. Its later history intersects with the religious upheavals of the English Civil War. In January 1645 Parliament abolished the use of the Book of Common Prayer in public worship replacing it with the Directory for Public Worship. Further legislation in August prohibited its use even in private households with fines and imprisonment prescribed for repeated offences.Although mere possession was not expressly criminalised contemporary accounts document the destruction of Prayer Books by Parliamentarian forces. This 1604 edition therefore represents a liturgical tradition whose authorised use was subsequently suppressed before the restoration of Anglican worship following the return of Charles II in 1660.PROVENANCEEarly ownership inscription dated 1742.Unidentified institutional or library stamps to the title and preliminary material.CONDITION COLLATION & COPY NOTESCOLLATION28 unnumbered leaves 299 numbered leaves; title preliminaries Psalter and final leaves; two parts in one.A sound and characterful early seventeenth-century service book in 17th-century plain vellum.Binding with expected age-soiling rubbing staining and handling marks including darker staining to the lower board. Various settings showing the band members posed with their instruments including banjos violins trumpets drum and tubas. Varying wear but generally very good with some normal age-related fading. Very Good. Originally from Lawrenceville New York the Shepard Family Band toured throughout the Northeast in the 1880s and 1890s eventually settling in South Royalton Vermont. All members of the family were apparently musically inclined: “In addition to Minnie mother and matriarch Mary “Minnie” Shepard and her husband patriarch James Monroe Shepard all of the children were pressed into service. Daughter Laura Belle the ‘violiniste’ was getting better all the time under the instruction of a ‘competent master.’ Her fans “will be astonished at the improvement in style tone and expression.” It was said of little Lessie that ‘Among lady cornetists she has no equal.’ The darling little son of the family Master Burtie could not help but please for he was well-known to be ‘The youngest Tuba soloist in the world; only nine years of age; scarcely larger than the instrument he plays.’ He was also a ‘clever comedian singer and character artist.” The baby little Flossie “a sweet little miss of four summers’ was said to be a “wonderful mimic and impersonator…a veritable little fairy.’ Daughters Kittie and Georgia were also part of the troupe.” - Henry Sheldon Museum. A collection of orders to justices of the peace and other overseers of the poor dictating how they were to respond to food scarcity in their communities. As the proclamation itself notes this was largely an expansion of similar orders and reforms to the poor laws made by Elizabeth I and James I. The practice of grain market regulation after crop failures had expanded significantly under Elizabeth in 1586. Among other requirements the orders mandated that corn be sold in an open market and that justices of the peace be present to ensure fair prices and prevent hoarding.
