1816rif. 755661816. The Repudiation of Queen Caroline Trial. Caroline of Brunswick Queen of England 1768-1821 Defendant. The Attempt to Divorce the Princess of Wales Impartially Considered; More Particularly with Reference to the Probability of its Success. London: Printed for J. Ridgway and Sons 1816. 25 1 pp. Lacking final advertisement leaf. Octavo 9" x 5-1/2". Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in early textured cloth printed label to front board edges untrimmed. Light toning and foxing to interior. $250. Third edition one of four from the same year. The repudiation of Queen Caroline by King George IV was one of the most sensational events in English history. Estranged soon after their marriage Caroline was eventually banished to Europe after the birth of their daughter Princess Charlotte Augusta. In 1820 her husband's accession to the throne brought her back to Britain. The King asked his ministers to get rid of her. After she refused a monetary offer to ask for a divorce the Earl of Liverpool introduced The Pains and Penalties Bill to the House of Lords in July 1820 in order to strip Caroline of her title and dissolve her marriage. The bill alleged that Caroline had an affair with a servant Bartolomeo Bergami while in Italy. The bill was approved by the House of Lords but it was not submitted to the House of Commons where it would have been defeated. Despite the King's best attempts Caroline remained a popular favorite. Published in 1816 our anonymous work presciently concludes that "there is every reason to believe that the design of dissolving the existing marriage of the Prince Regent will fail" and that "the expectations of the Princess Charlotte will not be defeated." London: Imprinted.by Robert Barker Printer to the Kings Most Excellent Maiesty And by the Assignes of Iohn Bill 1635. 15-1/2" x 11-1/4" broadside text in single column below headline and large woodcut royal arms ten-line woodcut initial. Moderate toning faint horizontal fold line through center faint dampstaining to lower quarter of sheet chipping to edges with loss to imprint statement at foot of text bottom edge repaired. $750. This proclamation announced one of the king's strategies during his period of personal rule to raise revenue without reconvening Parliament. It established a commission which for fees paid would cure defective titles. There are two versions of this broadside; one has the initials "C" and "R" above the royal arms the other does not. Ours is the version without the initials. Both are rare; fewer than 5 copies of either are listed on OCLC and the ESTC. OCLC locates 1 copy in North America identical to our version at Yale. 1860rif. 2302035Boston: Adams Sampson & Co 1860. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st printing of this very scarce business directory covering six states: Maine New Hampshire Vermont Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut. 1/2 leather and boards the paper over boards containing both title and several pictorial ads. Text of listings and other info runs 912pp much of the print font quite small to accommodate thousands and thousands of listings. Following this main section are over 208pp of ads many with pictorial engravings. On the fore edge is printed in abbreviation the six states with a small thumb index to assist the reader to open up to a given state. I have named Samuel Colt to the authorship to draw attention to the fact that following page 664 Colt has four pages two leaves one a color paper. The heading is: "The Pioneers of Civilization COLT'S REVOLVING BREECH FIREARMS small pictorial device showing five firearms PISTOLS RIFLES CARBINES AND SHOT GUNS." Under this heading is "Simple Reasons for preferring Colt's Arm to all others." The second page shows a target with pin point marks on it "Col. Colt's Military and Sporting Rifles" with text. Third page is a price list. Page four prints a "CAUTION" that has to do with a discussion of patents. But of course the huge bulk of this book is the listing of thousands of businesses in New England divided state by state. Leading them are several pages of INDEX TO HEADINGS which remarkably lists each type of business with columns showing how many of each are in each of the six states. Following that is a POPULATION OF NEW ENGLAND section county by county. And there is a list of telegraph stations in the entire United State. The section listing railroads in New England. The information just goes on and on. Vg condition with moderate wear to paper on the boards removing some text but not very much. The leather spine has wear but is stable. Very scarce.
