1999"This book traces the link between Serbian national mythology and genocide in the former Yugoslavia. Unlike other books dealing with this subject, [it] analyzes the conflict's long-term sources, going as far back as the pre-Christian Slavic pagan religion. It also points out ways in which Serbian leaders convinced at least some members of the international community of the righteousness of their aims." 256p. Book

2000"In May 1999, in the vast tent city that sprang up overnight under the Macedonian skies, one desperate request was not for food or water but for cellular phones - to find children, husbands, parents missing in the chaos of Kosovo. From phones to laser-guided missiles, this was war at the end of the twentieth century, where technology rules... ''Virtual War' describes the latest phase in modern combat: war fought by remote control. Kosovo was such a virtual war, a war in which US and NATO forces did the fighting but only Kosovars and Serbs did the dying. Ignatieff raises the troubling possibility that virtual wars, so much easier to fight, could become the way superpowers impose their will in the century ahead'" 249p. bibliography, index Book

2000"At the end of the twentieth century people spoke as if the Balkans had plagued Europe forever." "Mark Mazower dispels current Western cliches and replaces stereotypes with an account of how mountains, empires and religions have shaped their inhabitants' lives. As a bridge between Europe and Asia the Balkans has been exposed to a constant incursion of nomadic peoples across the centuries. Mountain ranges made farming hard and political control almost impossible and allowed small communities to live side by side through to the end of the twentieth century. Empires based on religion not ethnicity shaped customs and beliefs in ways that did not entirely vanish with the coming of modernity." A short but well researched introduction to the complex and always compelling history of the Balkans. 160p. bibliography. index Book

Opera assai rara.
