1849rif. 93589London: David Bogue 1849. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London David Bogue 1849 first edition in English. Octavo two volumes xvi 338 and vi 378 pages plus a frontispiece in the first volume and 3 small folding maps all with a little hand-colouring. Early half calf and marbled papered boards with all edges marbled and matching marbled endpapers; leather a little rubbed and marked with light tidemarks near the joints of the first volume; tidemark to the frontispiece; scattered foxing; an excellent set. The frontispiece with an image size 188 × 114 mm without any margins has been mounted on thick paper; presumably this was done at the time the book was bound in the nineteenth century. Prince Adalbert 1811-1873 was a Prussian naval theorist and admiral; several journeys led him between 1826 and 1842 to the Netherlands Britain Russia Turkey Greece and Brazil Wikipedia. He spent the last four months on 1842 in Brazil. Alexander von Humboldt makes the following comments in his three-page introduction to this translation: 'this interesting Work . conducts us through Brazil to the mouth of the Amazon River and through this into one of its important tributaries the Xingu the course of which is now explored for the first time. The Journal of Travels printed originally only for the perusal of his friends . is not in the strict sense of the word a scientific book; nevertheless it contains observations and views of nature and customs which reflect a vivid picture of the scenes which the Prince witnessed and passed through. Instruction is imparted in the most pleasing manner when an unaffected simplicity and an absence of all pretension pervade a work like this'. This set was purchased at the dispersal sale of the Hope family's historic property 'Wolta Wolta' at Clare in South Australia; there is some serendipity in this given the Schomburgk family's close connection with the state. Richard Schomburgk accompanied his explorer brother Robert on an expedition in 1840-44 to British Guiana as botanist and historian. He later published the three-volume account of the expedition before emigrating to South Australia where he was a pioneering vigneron and an influential head of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. 2 items. A remarkably rare survival of the first edition in English of Lettre sur l’education 1760 the declaration of Frederick II King of Prussia 1712-1785 announcing his desires regarding educational reform. Soon after the original Continental publication Frederick laid the basic foundations of what would eventually become the Prussian primary education system issuing in 1763 a decree for the first Prussian general school law based on the principles developed by Johann Julius Hecker. A true progressive in matters of learning he championed the acquisition of knowledge for the sake of knowledge and believed that women ought to be provided with the same opportunities of their male counterparts as the were no less capable: 'leur intelligence ne le cède point à celle de l'homme et même qu'avec une éducation plus mâle elles l'emporteraient sur nous'. 'Their intelligence does not yield to that of man and even that with a more masculine education they would prevail over us'. ESTC records a single copy Miami. ESTC N33830. This work by Frederick II the King of Prussia also known as Frederick the Great presents his political philosophy including thoughts on morality social structure and individuals/citizens and their role in the health of nations. It is perhaps most important for the response it elicited from Voltaire who wrote a satirical letter in response in which he ironically praised the ruler for his ability to simultaneously applaud the humble virtues of the everyman represented here as a cobbler while sending many such men to their deaths in military campaigns specifically the Seven Years War. While Voltaire mocked this particular effort the two corresponded regularly and Voltaire even called Frederick a 'philosopher king.' Frederick published other political works as well including a rebuttal to Machiavelli's The Prince. Pierre Mortier hardcover

First and only edition of this richly illustrated scarce and uncommon book was printed for the German Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife Augusta Victoria the commemoration of the construction of Alman Çesmesi i.e. German Fountain in Constantinople and the first anniversary of the Wilhelm II's travel to the Ottoman Empire in 1898. The fountain's design was drawn by the architect Spitta and constructed by the architect Schoele with the German architect Carlitzik and Italian architect Joseph Anthony working on the project. The fountain was built in Germany and then transported piece by piece to Istanbul reassembled in its current site and officially opened on January 27 1901 on the birthday of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Wilhelm II's voyage to the Levant in 1898 was a state visit that the German Emperor undertook in the Ottoman Empire between 25 October and 12 November 1898. The Kaiser started his journey to the Ottoman Eyalets with Istanbul on 16 October 1898; then he went by yacht to Haifa on 25 October. After visiting Jerusalem and Bethlehem the Kaiser went back to Jaffa to embark on Beirut where he took the train passing Aley and Zahlé to reach Damascus on 7 November. This book is richly illustrated including many views of the cities of this voyage's destinations like Jerusalem Damascus Beirut Beirut Jafa Baalbek etc. On 10 November Wilhelm went to visit Baalbek before heading to Beirut to board his ship back home on 12 November. His visit spurred interest in the German Templer colonies in Palestine. One of the Kaiser's traveling companions Colonel Joseph von Ellrichshausen initiated the formation of a society for the advancement of the German settlements in Palestine named the Gesellschaft Zur Förderung der Deutschen Ansiedlungen in Palästina in Stuttgart. It enabled the settlers to acquire land for new settlements by offering them low-interest loans. A subsequent second wave of German settlers founded Wilhelma named after the Kaiser now called Bnei Atarot in 1902 near Lod Walhalla 1903 near the original Jaffa colony followed by Bethlehem of Galilee 1906. The German Settlement Society successfully encouraged some of the Templars to return to the official national Protestant Church. The non-Templar colony of Waldheim now Alonei Abba was subsequently founded next to Bethlehem of Galilee in 1907 by proselytized Templers now affiliated with the Old-Prussian State Church. The visit resulted in the highest-profile political event in the life of Theodor Herzl considered the founder of Zionism. Through the efforts of William Hechler via Frederick I Grand Duke of Baden Herzl publicly met Wilhelm II three times during the voyage once in Istanbul on 15 October 1898 and twice in Palestine 29 October and 2 November. The meetings significantly advanced Herzl's and Zionism's legitimacy in Jewish and world opinion. Wikipedia. Only one copy in OCLC Library of Congress. Karl Süssheim Collection no. 1300 900684728. 1815rif. 3633626/03/1815. In 1815 Berlin had been liberated from Napoleon for just 2 years and the Palais am Wilhelmsplatz in Berlin was a key aristocratic residence near the Wilhelmstrasse which was becoming a hub for government and high society. This area was crucial for military leadership and elite housing near the Brandenburg Gate often used by Prussian royal families and high-ranking officials during the post-Napoleonic era. Composed just days after Napoleon Bonaparte returned to power in France March 1815 and Prussia had reason to fear another invasion this letter offers a glimpse into the private concerns of the Prussian royal family at a moment of major European upheaval. Despite the looming political crisis the correspondence reflects the everyday workings of aristocratic patronage property management and family influence within the Prussian court. Princess Charlotte Autograph letter signed March 26 1815 to Prince Friedrich of Prussia just 6 days after Napoleon's arrival in Paris for his famed 100 days. ""Esteemed uncle A gray eternity has passed since my eyes last gazed upon your gentle countenance I feel anxious and I long to see you again. Two matters urge me today to burden you with my lines; firstly to find out about your health and how my uncle is doing; and secondly it is a request to you on behalf of Ms. von Kleist who would so much like to live in some rooms in your unused Palais at the Wilhelmsplatz. Aunt Hußen has already written to you in this regard and you didn’t know whether the King would allow it. Now I received a letter from Papa yesterday who told me that he cannot grant the request as it concerns the Johanniter Palais and is therefore at the disposal of his brother Heinrich; so he leaves it up to you and as one can see he will not mind; and is it not true that you are not using the whole large building at all and that you will heed my request all the more so since it is your aunt Auguste’s wish I am counting on your generosity and kindness my one and beloved uncle and I am waiting for a favorable response; as I am kissing your gracious hands in my mind until it can soon be done in actuality – your Charlotte"" <img class=""alignnone wp-image-25018 size-post-window"" src=""https://cdn.raabcollection.com/wp-content/uploads/20231204144051/Folder-site-11-1600x1327.jpg"" alt=""historical memorabilia dealer"" width=""1600"" height=""1327"" /> unknown

1900rif. 1649241900-01. Ten-thousand words of musings on democracy aristocracy and plutocracy An extensive manuscript being Kaiser Wilhelm's unpublished translation into German of an article covering political theory from the English journal The Quarterly Review. The original article by Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson published in the October 1900 issue of the journal pp. 359-80 was nominally a review of eight recent books on political philosophy among them Heinrich von Treitschke's Politik E. L. Godkin's Problems of Modern Democracy and Theodore Roosevelt's American Ideals. In practice as standard for the Quarterly Review the article used the reviewed works as a starting point for a wider discourse. The article would have clearly appealed to the Kaiser. It begins by asking whether political philosophy even exists and the author notes that historically political philosophy is characterized by absolutism. However he observes that there is now a shift towards relativism. The trend in modern politics is the state's growing power and size those in control increasingly influenced by plutocracy. He argues that the House of Commons gradually ceded its power to the Cabinet risking a shift in British democracy towards the American plutocratic system. The solution is to preserve an aristocracy but one based on training and ability rather than birth. Wilhelm has dated the first page "25.12.1900" and "2.2.1901" and the last page "17.2.1901" presumably the dates between which he translated it. The lengthy project totalled around ten thousand words. He has made a few corrections and underlined some words for emphasis. Generally the manuscript is written confidently in Wilhelm's bold hand. Wilhelm had an English mother the eldest child of Queen Victoria and spoke English fluently though from his boyhood preferred the Prussian militarist and autocratic teachings of his tutors to the British liberalism of his mother. Wilhelm had been Kaiser for 13 years when he undertook the translation and his reasons for doing so are unknown. He was always deeply interested in political ideas the preservation of the German order and in Britain's development and its threat to German power. A typed transcript of the German translation and a photocopy of the Quarterly Review article is included. Manuscript 38 bifolia with full-page manuscript on 77 pages and running heading "Politik" on first page of each except the first; page size 235 x 202 mm; Wilhelm's coat of arms embossed in silver at head. Housed in custom quarter leather solander box. Very light soiling. In excellent condition. hardcover
