1601réf. 23709Venice: Ducal Palace 1601. Leaf. Fine. Single page of vellum 12 by 16 inches folded and with cuts along two margins to seal the page. Five lines of manuscript the first two in Latin then two in Italian and the last in Latin identifying Marino di Carvallo as the Venetian Ambassador appointed by the Doge of Venice to the King of France Henry IV of Navarre. Signed at the end in Latin "Leonardus Octobonus" for the Council of Ten. He later held the post of Grand Chancellor of Venice. "Marino Gramani Doge of Venice sends greetings and affection to the Most Christian King through our noble and wise faithful and beloved Ambassador Marino di Cavallo." It then references the decision of the Council of Ten the Venetian Governing Body and finishes with "Dated in the Ducal Palace this 4th day of April.1601." The Doge Marino Gremani antagonized Pope Paul IV by trying two priests under Venetian not canon law to which the Pope responded by placing Venice under Interdict. The Ottoboni were an aristocratic Venetian family which provided Venice with more than one Chancellor and ultimately produced Pope Alexander VIII. Marino de Caballo was also from an aristocratic Venetian family and was a noted physician as well as an Ambassador who believed that the most important aspect of his job was to provide an excellent chef and fine food. Finally Henry IV of Navarre a Huguenot ruler of Navarre as Henry III secured the throne of France by converting to Catholicism: "Paris is worth a Mass." Five years later he signed the Edict of Nantes the landmark drecree granting religious tolerance to Protestants and which helped end the Wars of Religion. . Ducal Palace unknown

1885réf. 139331885. Nineteenth-century albumen views of Venice's Ponte dei Sospiri and Palazzo Ducale document two closely connected structures in the judicial and political history of the Venetian Republic. The Bridge of Sighs completed in 1614 linked the Doge's Palace with the New Prisons across the Rio di Palazzo and carried prisoners between courtrooms magistrates' chambers and cells; the verso preserves a separate view of the Palazzo Ducale the former seat of the Republic's government and judiciary. Original large albumen photograph 10½ x 14 inches mounted on heavy cardboard to an overall size of 14 x 20 inches. The recto shows the Rio di Palazzo with gondolas moored along the canal and the enclosed Ponte dei Sospiri spanning the water its reflection visible below. Catalogued within the lower left corner of the image: "9. Venezia/ Ponte dei Sospiri." The bridge contains two enclosed passageways connecting the New Prisons with judicial rooms in the Doge's Palace. Its familiar name dates from the Romantic period and derives from the imagined sighs of prisoners glimpsing Venice through its small stone windows while crossing from judgment to confinement. On the verso is a second albumen photograph of the same size captioned within the image "38. Venezia/Palazzo Ducale." The two-sided mount preserves nineteenth-century photographic views of buildings central to Venice's former machinery of government and criminal justice. The Doge's Palace housed the Republic's governing bodies courts and earlier prisons while the purpose-built New Prisons were erected across the canal and connected to the palace by the Ponte dei Sospiri. Moderate staining and warping to the cardboard mount; the photographs themselves are in fine condition. The presence of a full-size Palazzo Ducale view on the verso gives the mount two related architectural records rather than a single Venetian tourist view. unknown
1885réf. 139341885. Nineteenth-century views of Piazza San Marco and the Loggetta document the architectural center of Venice and two of the principal monuments associated with the civic and ceremonial life of the former Venetian Republic. Piazza San Marco served as the city's principal public square bordered by the Basilica di San Marco the Procuratie and the Campanile while the Loggetta at the base of the bell tower formed part of the monumental ensemble surrounding the square. Original nineteenth-century albumen photograph 10½ x 14 inches mounted on heavy cardboard to an overall size of 14 x 20 inches. The recto presents a broad view of Piazza San Marco and its surrounding architecture. Catalogued within the lower left corner of the image: "48. Venezia/ Piazzo S. Marco." On the verso is a second albumen photograph of the same size captioned within the image "25. Venezia/Loggetta" depicting the Renaissance structure at the base of the Campanile designed by Jacopo Sansovino in the sixteenth century. The photographs preserve the appearance of central Venice before major twentieth-century interventions including the collapse of the Campanile in 1902 and its subsequent reconstruction. The Loggetta was heavily damaged in that collapse and later rebuilt giving the verso particular documentary interest as a record of the structure in its nineteenth-century state. Moderate staining and warping to the cardboard mount; the photographs themselves are in fine condition. unknown
réf. 11774Three nineteenth century photographs of Venice record St. Mark's Cathedral a sculptural detail outside the cathedral and the Ducal Palace concentrating on monuments associated with the civic religious and political center of the city. The views preserve contemporary visual evidence of Venetian architecture and public space during the nineteenth century with particular emphasis on buildings and sculpture surrounding St. Mark's. Three sepia toned photographs of Venice Italy. The first measuring 10 x 7.5 inches presents a frontal view of St. Mark's Cathedral one of Venice's principal churches. The second measuring 9.5 x 7.25 inches gives a close view of a horse statue outside St. Mark's Cathedral. The third also 9.5 x 7.25 inches depicts the Ducal Palace the historic seat of the Venetian government and residence of the doges. The grouping therefore records both the ecclesiastical architecture of St. Mark's and the adjoining palace associated with the political administration of the Venetian Republic. The photographs preserve nineteenth century views of monuments central to Venice's religious and governmental history including the cathedral overlooking Piazza San Marco and the Ducal Palace long associated with the city's political judicial and ceremonial life. The second photograph has a small tear at the upper right corner; otherwise the photographs are in excellent condition. unknown

Venice: Presso Francesco Tosi 1797. First edition based on Boschini's Le Minere della pittura 1664 and Zanetti's Della Pittura Veneziana 1771 with additions by the publisher Tosi. Both Boschini and Zanetti were of fundamental importance to the history of art in Venice. Schlosser-Magnino calls Boschini's guide "the first true artistic guide to Venice" and Zanetti's inventory of Venetian painting "one of the best in its genre" p. 548. This handy set combines their work into a comprehensive practical guide to monuments of Venetian art and architecture including a final section Istoria della Pittura Veniziana sic with biographies of artists; and an addition made in 1797 identifying paintings that were transported out of Venice by military force the same year. Marco Boschini 1613-1678 was a Venetian painter engraver and art dealer whose most important client Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici commissioned him to purchase Venetian paintings for the Medici collection. Zanetti 1706-1778 was the librarian to the famed Marciana Library in Venice for forty years and his familiarity with the art and artists of his city and his access to library records helped to produce his remarkable books. On Zanetti's guide Cicognara adds: "This is the best of the works which deal with Venetian painting and if every principal city possessed a book so arranged and executed we should have gathered together the materials for the best general history of art".
