1902ref. 662937Rand McNally & Company 1902. First Thus. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. A Good copy in the original grey pictorial cloth stamped in black some spotting and stains to cloth with wear to extremities particularly the upper corner of the front cover which also has dampstain; upper corbners of text have dampstain minor wear and spotting to text. Believed to be the first printing Rand McNally was inconsistent in marking printings in this era. This scarce edition of 'Alice' was issued as part of the Canterbury Classics series and features an introduction by series editor prominent educator Katharine Lee Bates now best remembered as the author of the hymn 'America the Beautiful'. It has a strange mix in tone to today's way of thinking - according to the Introduction the series was intended to 'help in arousing a desire for the more imaginative and inspiring legends of the Aryan race' and yet the final section - 'Suggestions to Teachers' exhorts them: 'The difficulty will arise not in talking down to the child but in thinking up to him. Let the spirit of the child lead you then he will love the book and read it over and over again laughing the wholesome laughter that has no sting in it.'. Rand, McNally & Company hardcover
