1923réf. 17762New York: Henry Holt and Company 1923 First edition inscribed by the author with her signaiture. In this memoir Florence Jaffray Harriman née Hurst 1870 – 1967 narrates her involvement in the suffragist movement the New York social scene and her frontline observations of both World War I and the Mexican Revolution. Chapter five of the book discusses the Colony Club New York's first woman-only private social club which Harriman co-founded in 1903. Much of Harriman's activism at the time was focused on improving conditions in New York factories and tenements and she eventually broadened the scope of her activism to farmworker rights in Texas—which put her on the bank of the Rio Grande during the Mexican Revolution in 1915. During World War I Harriman worked with Eleanor Roosevelt and the Red Cross and served as the chair of the National Defense Advisory Commission's Committee on Women in Industry from 1917 to 1919. The memoir ends shortly after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment: Harriman closes the book with chapters on her organizing with women voters and the postwar peace movement. . Publisher's green cloth titled in gilt. Binding is bright and clean. . Octavo. With twenty-six plates including frontisportrait of the author. Splitting to endpapers at gutter. Contemporary bookseller's ticket to lower pastedown. A very good fresh copy inscribed by the author "with affectionate admiration." Though the scope of this memoir ends in the early 1920s Harriman's political career flourished for several more decades. During World War II she served as the minister to Norway where she organized evacuation efforts for American citizens and members of the Norwegian government under the 1940 Nazi invasion. She is credited with safely evacuating Crown Princess Märtha and her three children. She published her account of the events in Mission to the North 1941. In 1944 Harriman wrote the foreword for the first English-language edition of Natalia Zarembina's Oswiecim Camp of Death one of the first publications on the Holocaust available in English. Good. original orange cloth with front-cover illustration; no dust jacket light external soiling modest wear to extremities except for heavy wear to bottom right corner of front cover board exposed front hinge a bit weak. cartoon drawings Humorous pieces with a serious edge or maybe vice versa highlighting "the plight of men nowadays i.e. the 1920s due to the new status of women. Life has changed for men since the time when the whole world was neatly divided into masculine and feminine spheres. The one hundred per cent HE of the Victorian era has passed and to keep pace with the feminine revolution men must find a new pattern of masculinity." At casual glance this book might look like it belongs on the Humor shelf but Mrs. Seabury wasn't exactly kidding around: an active journalist and suffragist she was a member of the Greenwich Village-based radical feminist debating society Heterodoxy was editor for several years during the 1910s of a magazine called "The Woman Voter" and wrote extensively on what today would be called "gender issues." Most possibly all of the 23 essays in this volume had appeared in such periodicals as Harper's McCall's and The New Republic. . Harcourt, Brace and Company hardcover books

1901réf. 1760London New York & Bombay: Longmans Green and Co 1901. Boards. Very good. Florence K. UPTON. STIGMATIZING ILLUSTRATIONS RHYMING VERSE WOMAN AUTHOR WOMAN ILLUSTRATOR. 8vo oblong 8 5/8" x 11"; 66pp; color pictorial boards a Golliwog and two Dutch dolls in a go-cart on front; quarter-bound green cloth; color patterned endpapers with swans and sailing ships lacking rear free endpaper; color vignette of a Dutch doll on title page; 31 full-page color illustrations; text and line drawings in sepia; wear and light soiling to boards with loss at corners spot on front board last page has age-toning lacking rear ep; very good minus. The story follows a Golliwogg and its Dutch doll companions as they go on an adventure in a go-cart. The Golliwogg character a Black doll with wild hair large white eyes and bright red lips was invented and popularized in Europe by the writings of Florence Kate Upton 1873-1922 and was based on the Black minstrel doll she owned in her youth. The Jim Crow Museum Big Rapids Michigan classifies the character as a "caricature of a caricature." The Dutch dolls were penny-wooden dolls popular because of their jointed limbs and inexpensive prince. This book was part of a series of 13 Golliwogg stories popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and illustrated by Florence Upton and written by her mother Bertha. Golliwoggs later appeared in stories by other authors and as dolls and other children's toys. Longmans, Green and Co unknown books

Hardcover. no dust jacket solid enough book with binding intact but should be considered a reading copy only due to external wear and bumping an unsightly beverage-ring scar on the front cover see scan and internal tape repait to a page that had been ripped in half. Uncommon novel originally published in France in 1921. It's "historical fiction" in a sense but as the New York Times described it in 1922 "it is not a history of Salt Lake City as occupied by the Mormons so much as the story of the mental and physical anguish of a young widow who is unsuspectingly drawn into marriage with a Mormon and finds herself the second wife -- one of three wives and perhaps others." A stage adaptation was presented in Paris in 1926 about which the Times correspondent commented that the playwright "obviously knows very little about Utah and the history of the Mormons and Mormonism and was forced to rely entirely upon Pierre Benoit who also unfortunately knows very little concerning them a fact which did not prevent his novel from obtaining immense popularity in France." Nor did it prevent Benoit whose best-known work is probably "L'Atlantide" 1919 from becoming a member of the Académie française in 1931. . Alfred A. Knopf hardcover books
