The engravings are of a uniformly bigh quality as one would expect from members of the van de Passe family; they are present here in strong rich impressions. Hind describes three additional single leaves that are present in some copies. The index leaf the most common of the three is present in this copy immediately following leaf V6. The leaf with verses by Jan Gruter which "only appears in occasional copies" is not present here; nor is the leaf bearing the emblematic plate in honor of Sir Thomas Holland which was absent in all but two of the copies known to Hind. This copy comes from the library of Alexander Hamilton Douglas tenth Duke of Hamilton also Marquis of Hamilton county Lanark Marquis of Douglas and Clydesdale Earl of Angus Arran Lanark and Selkirk Baron Hamilton Avon Polmont Mackanshire Innerdale Abernetby and Jedburgh Forest and premier peer in the peerage of Scotland; Duke of Brandon in Suffolk and Baron Dutton co. Chester in that of Great Britain; Duke of Châtelherault in France and hereditary keeper of Holyrood House. He was a great collector forming a significant collection of printed books and amassing a group of manuscripts that De Ricci describes as "remarkable"; he also acquired paintings and objects of vertu. In 1810 he married Susan daughter of William Beckford and thus on Beckford's death in 1844 he inherited that great library and art collection. He housed the whole at Hamilton Palace keeping the two libraries separate; his son the eleventh Duke continued to add items to the Hamilton library. The twelfth Duke put the collections up for sale at auction in 1882-1884; they fetched the unprecedented sum of £397562. ESTC: S119103; Hind II pp. 145-62; Sabin 32505. A critical primary source for the evolution of international law during a transformative era of global conflict. This work compiles the expert correspondence of a preeminent British jurist who succeeded William Blackstone as Vinerian Reader at Oxford. Holland a leading figure in analytical jurisprudence famously described international law as the "vanishing point of jurisprudence" a perspective that informs his commentary on the Boer War the Russo-Japanese War and early efforts toward the codification of the laws of war. This volume covers essential legal themes including measures short of war the rights and duties of neutral powers and the conduct of warfare between belligerents. This remains an important work for collectors of legal history and 19th-century diplomacy. The ownership signature is that of distinguished American lawyer Irving Bedell Dudley 1861-1911 who also served as United States Minister to Peru and later as United States Ambassador to Brazil. The front pastedown bears the bookplate of the distinguished historian and bibliophile Joseph M. Gleason 1869-1942. Gleason was a prominent Catholic priest historian and educator in California who amassed a significant library of over 100000 volumes. His personal bookplate is notable for its pictorial design-depicting an elderly priest at a desk with a globe-and the motto "Tamdiu discendum est quamdiu vivas" We should learn as long as we may live. Contents: Measures short of war for the settlement of international controversies; Steps towards the codification of the laws of war; The commencement of war; The conduct of warfare as between belligerents; The rights and duties of neutrals. unknown books
